Putting Car in Nuetral at stop light

I was wondering what the advantage, if any there is for putting your car in neutral at a red light.
This is for Automatic transmissions.
I know it doesn't save gas so don't go there.
I have never done it but I know some people who do so they don't accidently hit the gas and cause an accident.
But does it take pressure off of the transmission?
Thanks.

my old ford used to act up, so putting it in neutral made it idle a lot smoother.

There is no benefit really as I see it. Any wear you may save on the tranny and engine by "unloading" it (putting it in neutral) will be matched by the increased engaging and disengaging of Drive. You also run into the possibility of hitting the gas before it is fully locked into Drive. When I drove an auto, the only time I did that was in Winter to allow the RPMs to rise higher during the warm-up cycle, as well as to allow the alternator to produce enough power for the lights, radio, heater, wipers and defroster.

Ya, I was thinking that it wouldn't help the transmission since you are then going back into D, but i was just checking since I heard it somewhere.

Yep, It was nice to actually have a thread with a car question in it for a change though.

I actually wrecked a tranny in my first car by neutral revving then slamming into drive. Yay highschool. Mechanic said the gears were stripped.

It's an autotragic leave it in drive and press the gas when it is time to go. Also if it is in neutral and you need to move i n a hurry you will be fvcked

I have been practicing this for many years. Why would you want to sit there in gear (sitting still) with all the clutches-gears "engaged", especially in warm weather generating all that friction and heat... for nothing? ESPECIALLY in warm weather with A/C on, also generating extra heat. An engaged transmission is for vehicle movement. Also takes the strain off entire drivetrain and brakes too.
Great idea in sitting still for more than a few seconds... such as stop lights, bank/fast food restaurant drive-thru's etc.

I had a lot of fun in our 3800 series v6 transport van! Id do 60 foot burnouts! haha so much fun, if my parents only knew what i did to those things haha.

a 91? you realize that it's 17 years old, right?

i figure that once a car passes the ten years/100,000 mile mark, it's allowed to act a little funny.

There is nothing generating friction or heat. When you are in drive and sitting still with the brakes on, the torque converter is unlocked and you are just spinning fluid inside it. It is made to do this...that is the whole idea behind the torque converter. Neutral is only for emergency situations ("runaway" engine) or when you need to tow the vechile by a towbar or with the drive wheels on the ground.

Keep it in drive when you are driving.
