Can GAIN kill your head unit?

so i just installed a 4 channel amp and i accidently set the gain all the way to max and after about 5min of playing the music through my head unit my head unit smelled like it was burning and it stopped working. Did setting the GAIN to max do this?

doubtful.

the only connection between your headunit and amp should be the sound signal and the remote wire that simply tells the amp to turn on. the gain/volume itself is produced by the amp
