iPod adapter for 2005-6 balt, eBay
Hey guys-
My boyfriend bought me this iPod adapter for my '06 Cobalt on eBay, so I thought I would give a general review, because a lot of people have been interested in hooking their iPod up straight through the speakers. I had the FM transmitter for a while, but the sound was too terrible.
First, a link to an auction: eBay: 2005-2006 CHEVY COBALT iPOD DIRECT W TEXT + AUX IN (item 150057781492 end time Mar-10-07 18:58:06 PST)
Now, this product is definitely not flaw-free, and I have been thinking of doing a how-to to explain the problems I had, but it's probably not necessary as this thing comes with decent directions. We followed them all, and installed everything properly. I do have XM, so the hardest part was installing the relay between the iPod and the XM tuner (which is under the rear deck).
After we got everything hooked up, the display on the radio was not working as described. No text from the iPod showed up, and the controls that are supposed to scroll, etc, didn't work at all. We called the company and they said they'd try to get a cobalt radio to test on. After a few days of having the thing plugged in, I experimented. I turned on the car, *then* plugged in the iPod. This somehow jumpstarted the software, and the display and controls started working, and have worked fine since. Controlling the iPod through the radio is kind of cumbersome and slow, but it's so nice to hear the sound through the speakers directly. Also, I would advise taping all the connections and making everything really solid - I had a problem with their connections being loose and having my speakers go out when I hit potholes (and I live in New Orleans - they are EVERYWHERE).
The only problem I'm having now is with my XM - I only have 6 presets instead of 12 now. This product really confuses the radio, and you'll notice a ton of quirky behavior with it. But, if you can deal with that, then this is a good product.
By the way, my iPod stays in my glove box now - you don't really need to ever touch it with this setup. In fact, the controls on it are worthless when it's hooked up.
