Stock radio swaps
Stock radio swaps
Greetings all,
I just bought an 06 SS and really like the car a lot.
One thing that I wish it had was a jack in the dash so I can plug in my MP3 player of choice. I have an IPod and my lady has a Zune.
So, I noticed that the newer cobalts have the jack built into the radio. Will a radio from a newer Cobalt work in my 06 without mods???
Thanks in advance,

I believe each Head unit is car unique, thus meaning that just swapping them out will not result in the new deck working for you. The only way to get it done is to take it to the dealership and have it reprogamed, and even then its not a sure thing
from the FAQ
15.) I have an 05-06 cobalt and i want the aux in like the newer 07+ radios. Can I just swap one of those head units in my car?
Quick answer is no... yes its been done by one person (SilverSS/SC) but in the end some of the functions were lost and most of the buttons were backwards. He knew someone that worked at gm and had extensive knowledge of the tech 2 software... even then it took quite a while and barely worked. here's the thread about swap

Only other thing is you need if have xm is a 07 xm module . If u use your 05-06 the 07 radio will still play XM stations perfectly , but the station #'s will not show on the screen .
Everything else works PERFECTLY

All of the functions work . The only thing that was screwy was the radio controls and thats only because the 2007 steering controls do not have all the functions the 05-06 controls have . 2007's only have volume , seek/scan(up/down on CD tracks) and mute and all those function do work on my 05 steering wheel controls .

huh interesting... thought differently from reading the thread. It still required extensive working of the tech 2 software correct (not plug and play)? i shall update the FAQ with the info

Yea , sry for the mixed info . I got busy and wasnt on the net much and interest seemed to die on the topic , so I never updated .
Hi, if the audio system came with an XM radio tuner, I don't suppose if the factory head unit and the XM tuner being removed (to install an aftermarket head unit and XM tuner) and reinstalled later in the same car with the same VIN would have any problems, yes?
Nope , I think only the 04-07 Malibu's , some of the early to mid year Equniox's and Torrents and G6's ran the DIC thru the radio display .
The reason why I might consider removing the XM tuner (and On-Star module after the included subscription expires) from under the rear deck trim panel is to possibly mount my own XM tuner in that space. If the factory head unit is removed, the factory XM tuner won't work with an aftermarket head unit anyway, so to keep XM radio I will have to install an in-car XM tuner compatible with the aftermarket head unit I'm using.
Ideally, I'd like to use the built in stock XM antenna already on the rear of the car's roof, and I would imagine the stock XM tuner already has an antenna lead running to it at the rear deck obviously. I recall reading somewhere at one point that using the stock antenna could be a problem, but I'm not sure why that would be the case, especially if On-Star won't be used or sharing that stock antenna. The antenna connector may need some modifications though, depending on the aftermarket car-mounted XM tuner (e.g. Pioneer). As for small XM modules, I don't personally care for a removeable one actually, so prefer a permanently car mounted tuner that can be hidden. It's likely that some mounting holes might need to be drilled on the rear deck's sheet metal but that should be within resources I have access to, even if I don't drill a few holes myself.
