cobalt vs corvette!
Jesus, what are you some of you guys running?
I can only speak for my car (2010 SS/TC w/GMS1); it's quick and will spank a lot of cars on the road (e.g., Audi A4, BMW 328, etc). But my C6 Z06 is a whole other level. I'm pushing ~500 whp, I have the stripped model (1LZ), run it on a half of gas (curb weight = 3100 lbs). We're talking 0-150 MPH in about 17.6 seconds. I don't know if you guys have experienced that, but it is fvcking insane.
My hobbies and job put me around a lot of very fast machines (cars and airplanes). To beat a C6 Z06 you're probably going to need about 550 whp and a transmission that matches the Z's ratios (1st to 60 MPH, 2nd to 90 MPH, 3rd to 120 MPH). In my experience though, even for exotics like the poor b@stard in the SL65 AMG who tried to embarrass me (with a twin turbo V12), it's over in 2 shifts.
Another way to look at it, a C6 Z06 is almost SIX seconds faster to 150 MPH than a C6 LS3 (23.5 s).

also, i raced a sl65 AMG.... he SMOKED me.... im not sure he was trying when he tried to race you... they were the most powerful production car when they first came out. and enough torque to stop the world from spinning... i did a 3rd gear pull on him, 60mph, he fried the **** out of me... i mean... its to the point where i pull busses and g37s.... and he pulled ******* trains on me
what the guy said before you, your right... the fastest car in the world for the money is a z06..... but best bang for buck? idk about that... SS TCs are pretty good.... ****, i hate civic, but old civic hatch, with turbo k20, 600whp? call it a day... even better bang for buck,. but i would rather a vette....

Oh absolutely, the SS is incredible bang for the buck. That's why I got it; it can easily destroy $50K luxury cars with minor mods.
Ah the SL65 AMG. He was definitely trying. He was acting like a complete a$$, passing people in turn lanes, then he had the misfortune of coming up on me and tried to pass me on a highway entrance ramp.
Problem with those cars is the weight = 4555 lbs. The engine is phenomenal (604 hp, 738 ft-lbs) but it can't over come that porky curb weight.
Hard to say exactly what I'm making at the crank, but typically modified Z06's follow the stock power to torque ratio and have ~10% drivetrain loss. So at ~500 whp, we're probably talking about 470 ft-lbs at the wheels, accounting for drivetrain loss, 555 hp and 522 ft-lbs at the crank. With a 3100 lb curb weight.
I have a really nice formula that I've used for years to compare cars, it's usually pretty accurate. If you divide the curb weight by the average of peak hp and torque (ignore units), it gives you a solid comparison parameter.
SL65 AMG: 4500/((604+738)/2) = 6.706 lbs/blended hp and torque unit
Z06: 3100/((555+522)/2) = 5.757 lbs/blended hp and torque unit
Now the cool part. If you take the proportion (lower value/greater value) and multiply it by some acceleration time for the car with the greater value, it will tell you with decent accuracy what the other car will do.
Edmunds lists the 0-60 time for the SL65 AMG at 4.2 seconds. We can estimate the same for the Z06 by: (5.757/6.706)*4.2 seconds = 3.6 seconds. Stock Z06 is rated at 3.7 seconds, so this is pretty darn close. Looking at some of the Mercedes forums, looks like the only published value for an SL65 AMG 0-150 time is 20.5 seconds. So using the same technique, Z06 time to 150 MPH should be: (5.757/6.706)*20.5 seconds = 17.6 seconds (eerily close to reality). Ironically, the thread I looked at lists the Z06 as one of the few cars that will spank the SL65 (straight from the mouths of Mercedes owners).
Another way to look at this. If the Z06 weighed exactly the same as the SL65 AMG (4500 lbs), in order to achieve 5.757 lbs/blended hp and torque, it would be putting out roughly x hp and torque where x = 4500/5.757 = 780 hp and 780 ft-lbs at the crank.
That's really how you have to look at the Z06 compared to other cars that weigh in 600, 800, 1000 lbs more, etc.
That's my next project, enhance the formula to account for that stuff! I have a few things in the works, just haven't validated them with a bunch of cars.
One example:
Stock ZO6 w/typical options: (1)(3200 lbs)/((0.5*505+0.5*470)) = 6.564 lbs/blended hp torque unit
E92 M3: (0.9)(3700 lbs)/((0.6*414 + 0.4*295)) = 9.088 lbs/blended hp torque unit
Here there are two new factors, first there's a value at the front that reduces the end result if a more advanced transmission is present (in this case DCT on the M3 vs. standard manual on the Z06). Second, since the M3 had a ridiculous redline, I weighted hp more heavily than torque (60% vs. 40% respectively).
In this case we can try to figure out the M3's 0-150 time. I think the stock Z06 time is about 17.8 seconds. So (9.088/6.564)(17.8 seconds) = 24.6 seconds.

hmm.. well idk... those engines in the sl65 are also de tuned... bad... just like the lnf... but bang for buck.. z06 is better... like i said earlier.... fastest car in the world for the money is the z06... but idk about the sl65...
1 question, how is the ride in your z06? ive been in a couple c6 z06s, and the ride was really harsh

The ride doesn't seem that bad to me, but it's definitely better now that I have custom valved Bilstein shocks. Doesn't crash over pebbles. I'm very selective about driving it though. Weather, roads, time of day, etc. If I take it out in rush hour on roads with construction I want to shoot myself.
the sonic didn't replace the cobalt. They replaced the cobalt with a car that satisfied the wants of what the most consumers wanted. Smart business move.
Well look at it this way, very quickly it will most likely get wrecked, or he'll loose his liscnece to street racing or speeding tickets. Every did I've ever met whose parents bought them an expensive car like that (or bought them any car at all really) will never truly appreciate that car because they do not have to work for it themselves. I guarantee you appreciate your cobalt far more than he appreciates that vette. Plus if he actually washes the thing himself he'll be cursing the damn thing every day because it's black.

I totally agree with that! Kids who get badass cars free from their parents never appreciate the car they have, they just beat the **** out of it and make themselves look stupid. I would never buy my child a brand new insane car, have to get them a hooptie as their first car so they can experience what its like to break down, not drive super fast etc.

samething with him and the zr1....
but i agree with you, most kids who dads buy them a nice car, they end up ******* it up... but he is no where like that.
I wish. Unfortunately, back to my 60-80 hour work week. I do have one other trick up my sleeve though; I originally developed that formula to figure out how much faster one car would be when you add things to it (say GMS1 to a stock ss/tc).
I just realized something. I think we're talking about different cars. Guy that gave me problems was in an older one (probably 08) - run of the mill SL65. Are you thinking of the newer one (SL65 Black)? That would be tough, they dropped the weight by almost 400 lbs and increased hp by 40. Numbers are almost identical to a stock Z06, so it would be a driver's race. I think with my mods, and the fact that I'm crazy, I could probably still take one, but it wouldn't be a smack down like it was with the older one.

same engines in the s65. and my dads friend got one of those, he was telling me how his engine's torq was limited to keep him from spinning... then later he did a 100ft burnout in front of his house to show how much it was limited by. lmaooo!!
no... you dont know him... this kid appreciates everything he has in life. he appreciates his zr1 more than anything except for his future wife and family. it was a gift from his dad to his son. my dad gave me a gold necklace, i appreciate it, even tho its ugly, i wear it cause it means something....
samething with him and the zr1....
