does your oil go black fast?

i swear, last time i had an oil change my oil was black in 2-3 weeks,

i've used fram and delco filters, mobil1 and both combos do the same thing,

i change it every 7500km, OLM reads just below 30% everytime

anyone get this too?

thats messed up.. i change mine every 5000kms or 2-3months.. and its still gold when they change it (OLM reads about 55% after 5000kms..)

you should probably get that checked.. 2-3 weeks is WAY too soon for oil to blacken like that

Oil turns black from blow-by. Burnt gas from the cylinders during combustion leaking past the rings and mixing with the oil is what causes the color change. Do a compression check or differential pressure check to see if you have a bad ring.

Would there be a slight performance change with this? and if so would it be noticable, any drivability issues?

a better filter equals higher capacity, improved flow rate both in single and multi pass with better filter media and the like. this all allows for a cleaner oil.

You also have to keep in mind that if your oil is black then it is absorbing any imporities/carbon build up that will create engine sludge so there for it is doing its job, and those particles picked up by the oil leave when you change the oil.

30%... I let mine get down that low right now and I'm scared to drive it too much. Not that the percent matters as much as actual miles and driving style. Still I think the scale should be adjusted by 25-35%. I changed mine around 45-60% the last times. It was just about right.

synthetic oil also darkens faster than a conventional oil. the synthetic has special additive packages that help trap and remove sludge and carbon that most conventional oils cant. i'm sure you'll be fine.

Mine seems like it'll never turn black. I've never had a car before this one where the oil was still golden when I drained it out.

I should save my old oil and sell it to the neighbor for use in his minivan.

well, maybe you should keep reading... because 7500 km is really not a bad interval with synthetic.

I was told back when I was in school for Engine Rebuilding that black oil is a result from removing carbon deposit buildups.

No. Oil turns black from burnt gas.
