BIG EDIT TO AVOID CONFUSION:

There wound up being a hole in my intake! Between the engine bay and the fender, in that little area.

__________________________________________________ ______

Driving and it started raining pretty hard.

I didnt even drive through a puddle...

Car starts bucking like it does everytime it rains, water hitting the maf... Despite my k&n and hydroshield...

Car dies while driving...

Put her in gear drop the clutch it starts back up...

Running like total ****! Suprised the infamous power reduced light didnt come on.

Misfire on the interceptors showing somewhere in the 80 range for like 4 minutes. Im pulled over wondering whether to shut the car off or try to power through the water

Then miraculously car starts acting fine and i limp it home no more misfires, took the screwdriver stethoscope all over the engine it all sounds good.

Close call.

And thats my cool story of the night. Wtf... How can these cars not even drive in the rain?!?

It never rains here..
I had the same problems while in Germany
Very upsetting being pulled over on the side of the road worried that your engine might seize.

This is why for my intake I went with a ram air (short K&N) vs a cold air. Don't have to worry about driving in the rain, and I put a hydro shield on it just in case. Have yet to have issues even in downpours.

This.

Also, I've had a few intakes in my day (XTC, RAW, AEM, Injen) never had any issues with water.

Rice, you sure you purchased a hydroshield and not a prefilter?

A prefilter does not have the water repellant added like found on a hydroshield. They look exactly the same though.

I'm really thinking this is why my engine blew up. I was data logging doing pulls in the pouring rain.. No hydro shield

You have to literally submerge the filter in water for this to happen.

ie. driving through deep standing water.

A damp filter from some rain will cause some driveability issues, but u will not hydrolock the engine.

not always correct, it all depends how much you suck in and how fast. personal exp. on a neon taught me this. the air filter was near the top back of the motor and some how i sucked in enough water to create a 4 inch hole in the block where the piston went through. there was no way the filter was submerged.

I'm speaking in terms of our cars when making a comment not a neon man, lol.

On our cars, most of the water entering the intake track will vaporize once it goes through the blower. Again, you would need to really soak the filter on our cars for this to happen.

That could very well be part of the problem...

I dont do pulls in the rain i just stay out of boost so that i suck in as little water as possible through that filter. Its hard to imagine any of it would actually make it through a 3 foot uphille battle through that intake tube

no i completely understood stagged but its still the same principle. i realized that our sc vaporize some water due to heat, and our engines could even enjoy a nice refreshing drink if we were tuned for it. however if you suck enough up to quickly it can cause a serious issue. usually like you said it most likely would need to be submerged. however like in 574 case if it was raining really hard and your doing pulls, i believe that would be enough to kill the block. the sc is a excellent wet vac hahahahahhaha it would work way better then any shop vac i ever seen lol
