Oil Change: Jacks and Jackstands VS. Ramps?
Oil Change: Jacks and Jackstands VS. Ramps?
I always wanted a set of ramps. It is so much easier to drive your car up the ramps and do your thing.
What do you guys use for the Cobalt? Ramps or Jack and stands?

Ramps can be a problem sometimes....I personally don't like them. They almost always move when you try to get on them, unless you can keep them somehow. With the front being so low, you might actually damage it. Never tried it so I don't know...Jackstands and a small roller jack will do you wonders, plus when it comes to rotating tires, you can't do it with ramps, LOL!
I have both ramps and stands, but my jack sucks. It's lost a couple inches of lift over the years...if you get the basic rhino ramps, your car should be fine. I have less than 1/4" of clearance between my front lip and the top of the ramp going up, but there *is* clearance - that's the key.
Just don't back down it in a hurry and there's nothing to worry about. Also, I'm not sure if all ramps have them, but mine have rubber stoppers on the underside of the front to keep them from slipping while going up or down. They don't move an inch on concrete or asphalt.

For an oil change? I just reach under there to get the drain plug. Sure its a stretch but not unreasonable. The filter is up on top so that means less time reaching under the car.
I have a floor jack and stands if I need more clearance for other work.

i use jack stands and i am VERY VERY afraid to use the ramps.. although i would love to use the ramps but i'm on sportlines and i don't think my car would be successful at driving up those things

they do make low-pro ramps... they're only like six-eight inches tall for low cars. personally, i HATE jacking up cars, and use ramps whenever i can. the hardest part with a ramp is telling yourself that you're not going to go over the other side. (it's even harder with a 5 speed because if you stop, it's a royal bitch to go SLOWLY up.
with that said, i just reach under.
these are too much money, but you get the idea.

It is a 32mm. I got one that uses a 3/8 ratchet and extension.
I use ramps for the oil change, and stands for everything else.
