Wing Swap How To?

Is there a how to on removing a wing to put another one in? I didn't see one but there's a good chance I overlooked it.

I need some pretty good directions on how to do this because if I mess up the trunk (dents, scratches) I'm going to be pretty pissed lol.

Edit: I saw another topic and some people just said a blow dryer and fishing line. I need more detail than that.

Lol and a "beer and a chainsaw" won't work. I'm looking for instructions not humor lol.

just remove the carpet liner under the trunk, then each spoiler post has 2-3 10mm nuts, then use dental floss to cut through the adhesive, its best to do this on a really hot day, then the glue is softer.

I'm guessing you mean to use the dental floss up above the trunk where the wing meets the trunk top?

1. Open trunk
2. Remove black carpet on the inside of the trunk
3. Unbolt the 4 bolts holding the wing on by looking on teh inside of the trunk
4. close trunk
5. Take fishing line and cut through the double sided tape under the peds of the wing on the trunk
6. gently wiggle the wing till it comes off
7. wipe clean
8. goo gone the rest of the tape off
9. Weld holes shut
10. repaint.

..oh **** you wanted a new wing? gah i dont know then.

you can get the double sided tape at any hardware store... i like the 3M stuff it works good .. but make sure you get all the old tape off and clean the area with alchol .. and as others have said it is a much easier job when it's warm so get it in a garage and warm it up

Why do you have to take the carpet out of the trunk? I never did that...

Not sure if your car had one or not but most cobalts had a cover over the bolts to take the wing off and it had the carpet liner over that piece.

Lol, yeah mine has the carpet liner. Is that easy to get out too?

Also, what is the name of this 3m tape that I'm looking for, and how do I apply it?

Is the original tape just between the trunk and the wing bottom where they meet?

Bump.

So I'm getting ready to do this since it's getting nice out.

So this is what I have so far.

must be hot out
remove carpet liner
unscrew bolts
use dental floss / fishing line to cut through existing adhesive
wiggle loose
clean up area fully
put on new wing

so I'm guessing the screws will just fit into the new wing?
does the double sided tape need to cover the whole area of the base of the wing where I'll attach it?
Will this need time to dry??

Man really your making this hard than it has to be. Use common sense and you will be golden. You don't even have to take off the entire carpet liner on the trunk Pull out the left and right side so you can see the bolts; take out the bolts then close the trunk... once you done that take your hand and wiggle the wing front to back to loose in then start to pull up finally the entire wing will pull off. Then take some goo gone for cars and a heat gun if you have one and heat up the tape to pull it off but make sure you don't heat it to much or you will cause the factory paint to boil. Once you do that take the new wing and throw it on the trunk and complete the process. It took less than 5 mins to switch out my wing.

Are you going from a low wing to a hi rise? If so you shouldn't have any problems . If going from hi to low you could run into issues . When i put the low spoiler on my SS/SC it had to have some work done to the trunk lid because the larger bases on the high wing dimpled the sheet metal on the trunk .

When i switched to the low wing on my SS/TC i ended up swapping the whole trunk lid with someone who wanted a hi rise.

Lol I'm just trying to be prepared. I don't want to mess ANYTHING up. I'm just making sure that there's nothing that's going to go wrong in the process. I got my double sided adhesive tape today, and I'm going to try in a day or two.

Yes, I'm going from low rise to high rise.

no heat gun btw.

A hair dryer works well too if you don't have a heat gun.
Also, to prevent scratches on the trunk, it's a good idea to mask the area directly around the base of the spoiler with painter's tape. That way the fishing line or (i prefer) dental floss or your fingernails won't scratch the paint. Good luck!

I actually meant to post here before that I got it on and off with no problem! Getting the old tape off was a bitch on the trunk. Oddly enough, getting the tape off of the old wing was easy and I did it in maybe 4 big pieces.
