Bought my AEM DryFlow this morning and will be doing the mod when I get off work!

oh and I got the only one they had. It's the 21-203D. That should work right? it seems to be more round than conical.

I just put the aem dry filter on mine. i had to put the bottom of the air box back on though cause of the crappy dirt roads around here but its definantly makes the charger scream! i like it, great mod!

Ok don't get the 21-203D. The inlet is only 3" and the airbox is 3.25". But after some dremel work I made it fit, luckily AEM adds some serious extra rubber on the inlet area.

Anyway. I have it installed and gave it a few quick revs. 2 things. My filter doesn't have the open bottom like the one earlier in the thread and my engine, atleast in the garage, doesn't whine. sigh.

Your SC wont really whine unless it has a load on it. You should hear it more when you take it out for a ride.

Also, are you saying that we should go with the 21-2110DK?

Question, i just ordered a K&N hi flow filter for the 2.0. Will this be an acceptable filter to do the airbox mod with? As long as i use a hose clamp?

SilverStreak helped me with my airbox mod. On the RL it's called a saw, a drill, and cutting the box out lol

I don't know the specs on the 21-2110DK but if it has the 3.25" inlet then yes.

Also the engine was making a very pleasant WHINE when I went out for my "spin" a few minutes ago.

Probably not. You want to stay away from oiled filters because they burn out your maf and then you throw a cel. Go with a AEM dryflow instead.

You can use the K&N but you have to be carefull about the amount of oil you use and will probably throw a CEL at some point. I'm not sure how that will work with a replacement style filter. As long as it has a neck to clamp, the stockers don't.

oh and on a great note I saw 12psi on my guage for the first time since I bought the car 2 weeks ago. It never went above 10.5 before tonight but I think it was due to a dirty filter, tonight the boost climbed fast and on a good 3rd gear pull I saw 12psi

The car has a break in period of a few thousand miles in which it only hits about 10 psi. You probably exceeded the break in period and are now hitting proper boost levels.

Thanks for the info man, i already ordered the K&N so i guess i will have to make do.

except that I bought the car used with 11k miles on it.

I am very happy with the car either way. only problem I'm having now is the up seek button on my steering wheel controls doesn't work and my radio has issues with some MP3s

I plan on doing this modd with a K&N stock replacement filter. It comes in on Wednesday, so I should have it on by that afternoon. Heres how i'm gonna do it.

1) Going to let the filter sit in front of a fan for a while. To dry off some of the oil. And then maybe under a hi-power lamp to evaporate some oil too.

2) Since the K&N probably won't have a neck to clamp, i'm going to use the alluminum mesh that i used to make myself a custom grill a while back.

I will remove the removable part of the box and use the stock airbox screws to hold the alluminum mesh in place. This should be strong enough to hold the filter safely in place and also allow for great airflow and sound.

I will let you guys know how this works. If it does (and i'm sure it will) it will be the perfect dealer friendly mod. Because not only am i using a stock replacement filter, i also don't have to cut the box in any way.

It's not so much the oil from the factory, it's how folks clean and re-oil. Folks tend to put too much oil on. I just think the dry-flow let's more air pass personally.

Good luck with the mod!

you just leave this open like that? i know this was originally posted a reaaaalllllllyyyy long time ago, but, you just leave the filter exposed under the car like that? how many people drove through a puddle and flooded their motor with water using the airbox mod?

Its no different than running any aftermarket CAI.

Injens filter is COMPLETELY exposed. Its just a filter on the end of a metal tube.

The airbox mod is actually safer than aftermarket CAI because it still retains most of the protective box. But either way i havent heard of any hydrolocked cobalts, even ones with aftermarket CAI.

I went to Advance Auto Parts today to see if they had the 3.25" and they didn't. So I asked the guy if he could order it and he said it would cost $75. I told him that I will pass. Found one on ebay for $45 shipped. This size is really hard to find. Everyone has 3" or 3.5"

the 3.5 would fit. It would just take alot of cranking down on the clamp. The 3.25 will be snug without the clamp so the clamp will ensure a good seal and that it stays in place.

Little mini update on using the GMPP 2.2/2.4 filter for this:

I spoke with Tom @ crateenginedepot.com and he says GM has yet to release just the filter by itself for sale. If any of you SS S/C owners have any buddies with the 2.2/2.4 intake, ask them if you can test fit the filter on your car, because I don't know how long its going to take GM to start shipping them out.

Local place called Modern Street Performance. Its a dynojet and yeah I was amazed when I heard the price too, lol. I spoke to the owner about what I plan to do to my car and stuff, and he struck me as someone thats more interested in making his customers rides fast than making a quick buck.

I don't think anyone's hydrolocked using the airbox mod... the water would have to still be like 6" deep.

So stay away from puddles.
