I suppose it makes sense that the stock filter is more restrictive to quiet the air coming in.

Any universal air filter will do, just go to Pep Boys or Checkers and they have universal with different fittings that come with the kit and they cost about $27 bucks

I wonder if the entire airfilter housing has to be intact to securly hold the stock filter? But I wouldnt think cutting a portion of the side wouldn effect the seal/filtering on the stock filter? So basically it would just give a little more power/ sound but not as much as leaving the bottom off, but it would be free? What do you guys think?

My air box looks like the one at the top of this page , except it has the bottom left on . Ive used both the stock air filter and a K&N drop in this way and the stocker is alot quieter .

Glad it's working out for you!

Oh... have any of you bothered repping the original poster?

He is the one that came up with this in the first place... and I honestly believe it's the best mod out there for us.

I tested in similar conditions. Previous best in 90* heat and 80+% humidity: 14.82 @ 95.51 2.3 60'
Airbox mod and !spare tire in 87* heat and 86% humidity: 14.61 @ 97.61 2.27 60'

I'm actually surprised at the results. Best mod/$ I have ever made! I don't know I'll ever spend $200 on an aftermarket intake.

Nice times. The proof is in the pudding... so to speak.

It's lucky that these cars work the way they do... I don't know of many others that will just take a cone filter like ours will.

Great write up. I installed the AEM dryflow and decided to keep the bottom cover.I disconnected the battery cable and haven't gotten any codes yet.

With just the new filter, the supercharger is noticeably louder. Im sure once I get the S2 it will be quite a bit louder. Great mod and its worth doing for the sound and a little better throttle response even if you want to leave the bottom on for that extra water protection. Definitely worth the $40!

it's just a drop in filter that K&N makes, not sure about the AEM. Ckeck out your local parts store they usually have a performance catalog.

it fits the Typhoon kit they have and has a 3" inside diameter flange, so I should be able to take the same steps listed in this thread to fit it

I bought a 3'' inside diameter AEM by mistake and it would not fit on the stock air box . The size you need is 3.25'' .

extra mod

you can also cut around the air box enough to keep wall mounts and you will have the filter fully exposed i think its better because the filter gets more air 147 @ 5000rpms in 4th was my in result. once i tried it your way (i did that first) i could only get 140 @ 6000rpms in 4th

sweet

I found out the hard way.

I ended up giving that filter away to my friend. Now I sit and wait for another filter (3rd time).
