I know that's the old school ball park idea, but my understand is that GL ratings hasn't been updated by API for a significant time and that lubricant manufacturers have re-designed their additive package so they don't eat through brass as fast. I can see an inhibitor preventing the corrosion of brass in a gear oil working fine after seeing an inhibitor prevent HCl from destroying drill pipe.
