Wagman Winterfest will be held at
4 p.m. Saturday,
Feb. 16, 2008
at Nicholas E. Wagman Observatory
near Russellton, Pa.
Wagman Winterfest is the annual winter star party sponsored by the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh Inc.
The AAAP, with about 530 members, is the largest astronomical society in Pennsylvania. We operate Nicholas E. Wagman Observatory in Deer Lakes Regional Park, Frazer Township, about 18 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
There is no need to register to attend Wagman Winterfest. Admission? It's free. Parking fees? Nope. But be sure to bundle up. Bring a warm beverage, such as hot chocolate or hot cider. Dress for the weather conditions!
Please be careful where you park and walk -- the grounds may be slippery.
Want to learn about the stars and planets? Come and bring your questions! And if the weather cooperates, we'll take a look at some of the winter's wonders, such as the Orion Nebula!
Did you receive a telescope for Christmas and you don't know how to use it? Bring it along and we'll try to help.
Wagman Winterfest is held weather permitting. Severe cold or heavy snow will cause the star party to be canceled. If Wagman Winterfest is forced to cancel, we recommend you visit the Henry Buhl Jr. Planetarium and Observatory at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Science Center to continue your exploration of the cosmos!
For more information, call the AAAP's Wagman Observatory at (724) 224-2510 or Wagman Winterfest Director Pete Zapadka at (412) 487-9363. Click here to e-mail Pete!
The site's 3ap.org. I've been to Wagman, and it's pretty damn dark. Well worth the trip if anyone wants to bum a ride, caravan up, or meet up. I'll probably be leaving ~3-4pm.
Mars and Saturn will be up after 5 and 7pm...worth it just to check out Saturn, as Matt and Evan (I hope I got your name right haha) can testify. So obviously I'll be bringing my scope, which, since I bought it, has acquired a tracking motor and multiple eyepieces. Probably coolest thing outside of my Saturn (whoaaaa man) that I've bought. I can pick out 5 - 7 moons of Saturn, usually, and the ice cap on Mars. And mine's nothing too special. Oh, and the moon's at half-phase. I can focus on craters down to ~3 miles wide, if conditions are right (usually 300x magnification).
Anyone else up for it? I think my gf will be coming up, too, in addition to a couple of my students who are into astronomy. 2.4 Dan u best pass this off to your dad, if you can't make it.
This be mine, or a photo of one same as mine:

4" refractor. They've got an 11" (giggity?) at Wagman. Pretty wild to actually be able to see Andromedia as a spiral shape through the 11". I can just make it out as a cloud. Me need more $$$.

i would so love to go but i dont have a telescope
Yesh that was Evan, Jon
If you did not get those servos and star locator so i can sit back with a laptop and punch in, Starship Event Horizon, i don't want to see it!

Doesn't matter if you don't have a scope. That's the point of such a gathering, actually....those who have em bring em and let anyone who wants to look. Hell, find anyone w/ a scope and ask em to show you how to use it. That's what it's there for. It's a different atmosphere than the car scene, though this place has always been an exception
Car:
"What's under the hood of that truck?"
"If I tell you, I'd have to kill you."
Astronomy:
"What can you see with that?"
"Back in time, Infinity. Pretty cool stuff. Here, look."
I like both atmospheres.
Oh, and my tripod can puts the scope almost at 6 feet, so most people only have to lean forward a little bit, or sit in a chair. Stupid chairs. With cup holders. And beer.

Yeah, Dobsonians are good for deep space viewing, and when the planets are directly overhead. Refractors, all in all, work better for moon/planets because they're easier to aim nearer the horizon and track better, usually, which comes in handy because the planets move pretty quick. Or, well, we move quick. Get Mars or whatever in your eyepiece @ 300x, turn off the tracker, and the planet's gone w/ in seconds
And to all those who say, "I don't have a scope!" that's the point of such a gathering....those who have em bring em and let anyone who wants to look. It's tomorrow night :p
Dan, I picked it up during an employee discount dealeo they offered csc employees awhile back. Retailed over a grand, and I got it under $500. The eyepieces and motor and filters tacked on another $100 or so. The detail's impressive. High quality stuff, for not that bad.
I think the scope's actually on closeout now, for less than that
so it goes. They replaced it with some slightly different model. It's the Celestron C4 R. If you can find one (new) for a decent price, you'll be addicted in no time.
And it's up near Kittanning. Directions are on the site. Not too far at all, took me like 35 mins last time.
Gonna be clear tonight. GF and i'll be drinking and looking at stuff if anyone's around town.

oh and dan, that pic's deceiving. it's not a small scope. tube length (giggity) is 1000mm. weighs like 30ish lbs fully assembled. all the gears and ball bearings and whatnot are smooth as can be, but I also added better grease (giggtiy) and lube (giggity). It's full of sexual innuendo, is my big black tube.
