Bad piston rings.
Hey guys, new member and Cobalt ss owner as well. Picked up my 2006 ss for about $600 the other day. The guy said the motor needs replaced because it was blowing black smoke out of the exhaust. Like... No. Lol Anyway, the motor sounded fine but did have a huge power loss.
So, I diagnosed it today with a compression test and found the results to be 140-145 in three cylinders and the last to be 25 on the dry test and 80 on the wet test... Lol
Pretty sure this is ringland failure via the research I've done. So my questions are practically simple.
Does anyone have a writeup on pulling the head. And the tools needed?
Also, as long as the cylinder wall isn't scored, is this as simple as getting a new piston (with new rings for all the pistons, new heads studs, head gasket, etc.. of course) and calling it a day? Just want to be 100% on what it needs and getting the parts soon. Thank you in advance!!
