Hi, so the fuse for my gauge cluster and rear lights keeps blowing. I’ve put like 2 10A fuses which is what they call for and 2 15A fuses just to try a higher amperage still blowing. Is there any specific reason why it’s blowing? I drive a lot at night and can’t risk being without my taillights.

 

There is likely a short somewhere in the circuit.

 

Have you recently installed or removed your headlights? The outer clearance light bulbs are tied into the same circuit. Sometimes when messing with the headlights that wire can short against the body. Like ninja said, no doubt you have a short. If you have done any kind of work on the car recently I would check that area. If no work has been done to the car it may be more difficult to chase down but likely have a wire missing insulation and grounding against the car somewhere.

 

This is the fun part where you have to visually inspect your wiring harness. Check the area around the tail lights to make sure that the wiring harness isn't pinched anywhere and then you'll likely need to do the same under the dash/behind the cluster. It's possible that when doing recall fixes, a wiring harness got pinched or placed in a bad spot and wore through the insulation.

I had this happen with the (electric) secondary water pump and radiator fans on my MK2 GTI VR6. A wire got pinched between two things that were bolted together. This lead to the insulation being compromised and the wire grounding out, thus popping the fuse.

Might need to replace your brake lights, too. I've seen bulbs blow, and the filaments will end up bridging connections and making crazy things happen. Similar to this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledi..._two_circuits/

 

I recently put in a head unit and it seemed like it worked but it just took longer for the fuse to blow. I also replaced the turn signal switch to see if that was it but no luck. Is there a certain spot i should look that a wire could be shorted? I checked up by the RPD gauge but there was nothing. Should i check the wires from the head and tail lights?

 

I would guess you have a wire shorting behind your head unit. Iirc there is a 12v wire that becomes energized when the parking or headlights are turned on. This is what causes the back-lighting to dim on the stock head unit.
