P0717 - Need some tech help on this one.

P0717 Input Speed Sensor Circuit Low Voltage TCM

I have no MIL. I noticed my engine started idling at strange inconsistent speeds yesterday and the trans was shifting funny (late, hard). I scanned it and got this. Please tell me this is simple little sensor on the outside of the trans that I can replace easily and cheaply, and that I don't have to take the whole trans apart. Pretty please....

i thought the speed sensors were part of the hub. i could be wrong though.

edit. just confirmed with one of my techs at work, yes the speed sensor is part of the hub and bearing.

Input speed sensor is inside trans, thats the most likely cause, a failed sensor. A stretched or otherwise damaged harness is next and almost just as likely, lastly a failed TCM, not very likely, but could be.

1/2
Measure across the transaxle connector terminals S & V (or/or pins 3 & 26 at the TCM)
It should measure 615-835 Ω with ZERO continuty to ground (ie to the trans case)
There is a PI regarding this DTC being set intermittently due to a partial/intermittent ground out at one of the metal clips that hold the sensor's wiring harness to the upper valve body.
If you need a pinout for the transaxle PM me

Okay, let me work on that trouble shoot from WOP. I'll need a little time.

It must be intermittent if you're not getting a MIL as it's a Type B code that should bring on the MIL after 2 consecutive trips with FAIL. I would first R&R, inspect and reseat both the 20 way connector on the trans and the TCM connector. It might just be connections. If not you can measure the resistance but chances are it will show OK unless you meet the correct conditions for the intermittent FAIL. If you have a scan tool you can pull the Freeze Frame and/or Fail Record and determine what RPM/speed/temp etc that it's failing under...

Hopefully it's an external connection isue as the sensor itself (and the chaffed wiring issue previously mentioned in a PI) is under the channel plate and will require transaxle R&R.
But don't panic just yet 1/2 as we'll help you to eliminate all the EXTERNAL (and usually more probable) possibilities FIRST!

Didn't get a chance to work on it today. Girlfriend talked me into spending time with her and to work on it during the week while shes at work. It was a good idea actually (read as "got some").

Anyway, still no MIL. Problem is much worse with the air conditioning running. Still have the code. I'll get to work on it Tuesday now. I'll report back after that.

Rained here today, couldn't work outside. I did drive it about a hundred miles on an errand however it behaved normally. At the end of the drive I checked for codes and there were none. So it is definitely intermittent.
