Hi all......

I've noticed that when slowing down in gear(1st-3rd) the transmission now makes a whining noise??? Is this normal??

I have this as well, and my mechanic told me it was normal. If anyone else has anything on this I'd be interested to hear some more as well.

The Cobalt does have some gear whine, which is totally fine in a lot of cars. I notice it mainly when I get off the freeway and I'm coasting down in 5th, but it's pretty much always there. It shouldn't be too loud - if it's intrusive, I'd get it checked, but otherwise nothing to worry about.

Its normal i've had it happen in every manual i've ever driven and did notice it a little more in the cobalt the other day, but maybe its the colder weather, but my bro's 91 MR2 does it, My moms miata does it and so does our 94 4 runner so its normal :

Mine does it too. It didn't do it much at first but got a little louder once I put a couple thousand miles on it. Now it's settled in and hasn't gotten much louder at all.

that noise is just the synchros in the tranny keeping up with your shaft speed, as the trans slows down they have to slow down with it, thus a "whine" occurs.

I've notcied it gets louder as its colder. Noticed it tonight, but it happens as I have the clutch in and am coating down. Must be a synchro thing...

Thanks All!!!

This'll save me a trip to the service dept.

Does the tranny have fill and drain plugs I don't have a service manual and I forgot to look while I was changing the engine oil.

Does the tranny use Syncromesh?

Unfortuneatly, I might have to take it in anyway due to clunking while letting the clutch out. They checked it out once............ it seems to be getting worse.

I'll change the fluid before taking it in though...........can't hurt.
