Pressed on ring for front brakes?

I'm not sure why there is this extra ring that is pressed on for the front brakes. I broke a wheel stud and all of the procedures to take off the front disk on a 4 lug have the rotor just slide right off. That's not happening here and every thread or video for a 4 lug cobalt have the disk just fall off basically.

Is it just pressed on or do I have to take the axle nut off?

My car is a 2005 base model cobalt.

The rotor is loose. It's just that ring on there holding it on. I haven't seen any other cobalts with it.

I want to smash it until it comes off but don't want to break anything else if i dont' have to.

Just keep pulling, it'll come off. Once the ring moves a bit you should be able to get ahold of it with a pair of side cutters and twist it off.

thats a hub centric ring, its used when you have aftermarket wheels. looks to be corroded pretty good. hit it with some penetrating oil and let it sit for a while, then try wiggling the rotor around to get it to move. if you can, try getting a screw driver between the ring and the rotor and evenly pry it a little bit at a time.

Exactly this, and replace the stud too

Ahh, a hub centic ring, now I feel stupid. I used a thin tip screw driver and it came out no problem. Thanks.

Put in the new stud and new disc. It's nice to work on newer cars where the bolts aren't all rusty.

I think he was talking about the retainer on the stud that they use to hold the rotors on when they are assembling the cars
