Swapping PCM's

If this is a repost I am sorry, I dont have the time to search for the answer.

I am looking to buy from another member their stage 2 tuned PCM. Can I simply swap the PCM with mine and be good to go without needing HP Tuners? I will have the other stage 2 parts to install as well to support the PCM tune.

Help please as I need an answer soon.

Thank you in advance.

You will need a case relearn (HPT can do it)

is this any cheaper/easier than just getting a tune from you?

Hey, I am the one maybe selling the PCM with stage2... Is there any way I can send the PCM so that it can just be plugged in and it works?? I have HP Tuners but it is still in the box.....I am completely new to tuning cars....I suggested that the buyer here have someone local that could install the new PCM, or get the stage 2 tune somewhere else, or , I am guessing the best option, get a new custom tune that would support the other mods as well.........

My own question... Is there any advantage to keeping a second PCM on hand??

they are scanning for past tunes, so if you have a legit one thats from gm that will cover your warranty that'd be better to keep for if you need to claim warranty....an aftermarket tune showing up wouldnt be good.......the pcm has to match your vin or it won't work, other than that the pcm will work but you'll be throwing a case code that tells you that you need to get your case relearn done

So, was this in regards to my question about owning a second PCM?? So, since my stock PCM has only had the stock tune, and then a GM dealer installed stage 2 tune, I could keep that one as stock, then use the second PCM for other custom tunes?? If I needed warranty work, I could re-install the original pCM?? IF GM is scanning for past tunes, what exactly are they scanning??

Yes, you could re-install the stock (or stage 2) tune if you needed warranty work. GM is apparently starting to crack down on aftermarket tunes, and they know what to look for because the fuel mapping values will be totally different.

If I buy a copy of hptuners and flash it back to stage 2 tune before I go in theres no way they could tell it was ever tuned could they? Or if there were I could just swap pcm I guess. I'm trying to decide if I should just buy a 2end pcm to have tuned and pay $100 for the credits to tune it to quicksilverss when I'm back home on leave, or I could pay $500 and buy hptuners myself and not need a 2end pcm. So how much does a stock pcm go for these days?

I have seen PCM's go for around $200....maybe $300 if it has a valuable tune on it....that is open for debate as to what tunes are valuable...I actually bought mine for close to $100, so if you just look around, who knows??

I would want to keep my stage 2 pcm for swapping in for warranty work, and putting a cutom tune on the new pcm, so it can be stock for all I care. It'd just be alot cheaper to pay a friend 100 to unlock the new ecu and put my vin on it and run his tune he was using for a 2.9 and meth, adn then pay 1hr for $75 on the dyno and use their wideband sniffer to dial-in my tune. If I can pick up a pcm for 100'ish I could get it all done for around 300 versus paying 500 for hptuners so I can flash my pcm back to stock if needed and then pay for the dyno time it'd be almost $600. Buying a pcm could cut my cost of tuning in half basically.

The problem is when you swap pcms and leave the parts on your car will run like crap.

Well I can turn the meth off and the 2.9 will run, just not at its best with the stage 2 tune, and i'd probably be putting the stage 2 pulley back on if I go into the dealer anyway. The only reason for the second pcm is to not void my warranty from the 2.9 and meth, beacuse the exaust is gmpp anyway, the injectors are still gonna be the 42#'s from the stage 2, and even if I get a dp and airbox mod ect, they cant void my warranty for little things like that anyway. The 2.9, meth and the tuned pcm are the only things I dont want the dealer seeing.

I thought you could clear all the evidence using hptuners? Correct me if this is wrong, beacuse if you cant I'm just going to buy another ecu, problem solved, lol.

I don't believe there is any way to clear the evidence. You can only write the changes which can be viewed by the dealer. There is some number that is like a checksum, and they can see that it has been changed and modified.

So I'm either gonna have to get a stage 3 pcm and leave it at that or buy a zzp pcm and then get it custom tuned after.

Can any GM tech verify that on 07 and older PCM's you can tell if they were changed even if the stock file is flashed back to it?

I know they made some changes to the 08 PCM's that guarantees it can be found out, but are people sure it can be checked on the older ones?

Yeah thats pretty much what I wanted to know, beacuse if they cant tell on my '07, then I might just buy hptuners and do it myself. If I cant I'll have to look for a used one and if theres none used I'll have to buy a zzp pcm just to have the core then get it custom tuned, I wonder if zzp will sell me a core cheaper than a tuned pcm? Its worth asking when I get around to doing it.
