the GTO is far from a POS. They have some of the nicest interiors that I have ever seen, a pretty good ride/handling compromise and a Corvette powertrain. How is it a POS? My neibor just bout a phantom black 06 with 22k on it for $23000. He works at a machine shop and had the heads p&p'd, bought a magnaflow exhaust, CAI and a short shifter and ran a 12.0 on his first ever pass in the car. Probably 11s with some practice, all for about $24k... and he still gets 23 highway mpg. I would love to have a GTO.

Am I missing something? The best I saw in those articles was a 13.52 (see below), that's still .43 secs. slower than the fastest recorded internet time. I wasn't trying to say that GTOs aren't as fast as you claim, (I know they're faster than almost every Cobalt SS) rather that magazine times are always quite a ways off from what people on the internet seem to somehow manage. I'm sure it's mostly due to differences in the track, climate, elevation, etc. but you would think a magazine would try to get the best possible time they could.

Amazingly, the GTO turned in an identical 13.87 at 103 mph and then a back up of 13.65, but at an impressive 105.12 mph.

For round two we boarded the GTO first and ripped off a much-improved 13.52 at 105.50 and then a 13.57 at 104.89 mph.

A final try in the GTO netted a 13.54 at 104.58

Beginning at 13.8 on a shakedown run to learn the characteristics of the car, the second pass dropped to 13.65 and on the third 13.52.

On a side note, I meant to preface what I said about magazine times with this: I'm sure there are some small enthusiast magazines out there that will coincidentally have better times for a given vehicle (Pontiac mag. has best GTO time, Ford mag. has best Mustang time, Chevy mag. has best Camaro time, etc.) I was talking about the major ones being C&D, Motor Trend, Road & Track, and sometimes AutoWeek.

 

no your not missing a point , the point im trying to make is the mustang magazine ran the same time as the pontiac magazine , there fore showing no bias , second , there is a difference between .4 seconds for the gto (magazine to real life ) as there is .3 on the ss/sc (magazine to real life) so therefore there pretty much even and therefore you can use this as a feeler for the 2 cars , my point is , if you take the mag times the gto is still .9 better , if you take the real times the gto is still .9 better , my whole point is that it doesnt matter who does the runs whether its a magazine or a real life driver , the gto is AT LEAST .8 of a second faster than a cobalt ss/sc on any given day (same track same day, good drivers )

This whole GTO vs Cobalt SS argument makes me sick every time its mentioned (but like an accident on the side of the road, I can't look away when a new post comes up :P)

This "rivalry" shouldn't even exist. This is essentially like comparing a modded focus to a stock mustang GT. If that sounds funny to anyone else then think about how comparing a cobalt to a GTO sounds.

We are comparing apples to oranges here people!! Nobody is going to win this argument!!

Granted I would love to have enough mods to beat a 12 second car, but at that point I'd be more proud of being in the 12s than of who or what I could beat. I know thats just me but I think more people should be in it for the fun and cut the "I'm faster than you now! HAR HAR!!" mentality. There will always be someone faster!

ok so out of curiosity did anyone watch the video in the side display of the non sss/c running a gto. they said it went 13.9.

It was an 04 GTO, that's why it went 13.9. Those came with less Hp and Tq then the 05 and 06's. The 05 and 06 GTO's are low 13 second quarter mile cars. Those are better compared with stock LS1 Camaros from the early 2000's. My boy's 2000 Camaro Z28 A4 ran a 13.3 bone stock, and that's right about where the 05 and 06 GTO's are.
