Mustang GT Vs Cobalt SS
#78
Probably because no other FWD cars have tried the ring except maybe a Ford Focus...
Edit: quick google search shows the Renault Megane RS faster. But then again, it could also depend on the driver

Both the Renault Megane RS Trophy and RS 26R are purpose built track cars. No airbag, no climate controls, no radio, removal of seats & sound-deadening, etc. Infact, the RS Trophy isn't even street legal. So that being said, the SS/TC is techincally the fastest if you exclude purpose built cars with all sorts of **** ripped out of them.

If you look at the cars that are within a 10 second +/- lap time, the SS/TC is pretty impressive considering it was around a $23k car new:

Data point, at the same road course (Beaverun), my heavily modified 90 Notchback (Redline Time Attack '05) at ~300 rwhp and 3000lb on Toyo RA-1s was only 3 seconds a lap faster than my 100% bone stock '09 SS/TC. Mustang ran a 1.06 in slightly damp conditions to the Cobalts 1.09 in the dry. Pretty damn impressive.

Pretty sure the Focus RS just beat the SS/TCs time recently. The SS/TC is a great track car in stock form for the money, but Mustangs can be modified to be no slouches around the track either (up to the S197s most models did suck in stock form, the Cobras were decent for the time). Not sure where the hatred for either comes from. Visit a road course and you will see many Mustangs from every generation, and unfortunately few Cobalts, whose owners seem to be more concerned with roll racing on the highway most of the time.

The point here is what's stock and what's the trend, not what's possible. Anything is possible, so there's never a point with that argument. SS/TC comes stock as a pretty good performer for the curves, simple/cheap to get good power out of it, and until the new ones, a Mustang typically did not.
That being said, the odds of coming across said proper cornering Mustang on the street is also pretty slim. I've seen maybe a handful the last several years, anywhere other than a driving event, that were modified in any way to handle corners as well as power.
A guy turbo'd his Mustang. Sweet. It's quick, as it should be considering the mods. Once again, the odds of coming across one like it is pretty slim though.
To illustrate my point, I've only run into one Mustang on the street that's beaten me, and it turned out to be a GT500 Super Snake (snuck up behind me in a pull and opened up a can on me)... it can have it because those are just cool/mean anyway. lol Are there other quick Mustangs out there? Sure, but not plentiful, and not cheap.

Honestly, I have no hate towards Cobalts. I kinda like the TC models. They are peppy. I was sick of seeing Cobalts racing stock-bolt on GTs and being like "EL OH EL totally smoked this piece of **** Mustang". So I did what I did, and posted the vice versa outcome. Dart_SI, I also have yet to be beaten by a Cobalt of any sort. I'm usually a very easy going guy, but when someone says all Mustangs are crap, etc., etc., I have to show that there are some quick ones out there. Hell, my car is still on stock heads/intake and on pump 93. Did i mention it is a 2v? (4v's are the Cobras).

2v's can still make good power with a turbo. Especially the pi 2v's. But as you know ultimately they don't respond as well as a 4v or ls1. I'm a mustang guy hell I've owned 7 foxbodies. Been on stangnet since 99 and on modularfords. But will admit the short comings. Even hot rod magazine did a build up of a 4.6 2v. They got some decent power numbers out of it. But it took more cash than it should of. Mustangs can indeed be made to handle. Ford even made a track oriented one back in the mid 80's called the svo and it used a 2.3t that made similar power to gt. It was actually a stout little motor and was able to handle more abuse than the 5.0. But it didn't sell well and was a bit pricey. But it was a cool mustang! Point is they can be adaptdd to run in most styles of racing.

3 foxbodies here. Vortec s-trim, zex nitrous, all motor, tried all kinds of flavors. Allfordmustangs was my home back in the day. I do love my lil 4bang sneezer. It's quick enough and its so well mannered when your not in the mood.

Honestly, the street manners of my car are stupid. It drives like a damn stock Mustang until you put your foot in it. You could never tell its turbo'd (except the FMIC), and sounds like a catback only Mustang. Never would think it traps 130+

I think there are some people that are underestimating the skid pad of the mustang. It has been on average .85 or better for a base model GT since 1996. And as good as over 1G for some models including some cobra's and special editions. Thats no slouch in the twistys and just because you met a driver that was not pushing the car does not mean you outperformed the car! But this is the cobalt forum... A newer roush S3 handles a 1G or better WET skid pad for the record if 08+

I get tired of smoking slow mustang gts too, so I guess we have a mutual agreement sorta kinda.
