Being a previous two different audi owner... The GLI is nothing more than a tuned 1.8t jetta. It has sport tuned and the k04 turbo rather than the k03 the 1.8t came with. The k04 came with a bigger turbine and inlet/outlet.. They are quick, but he would have to be chipped at the least to take you like that. I took my audi a4 1.8t apr chipped with intake full exhaust and i raced my current ss/sc and it was very very close.
More than likely he was chipped and bigger bolt ons. If he smoked you, most likely he has the upgraded gt28 kit like mentioned earlier.
BTW i also has an a6 2.7T twin turbo v-6... it was a shame that such a powerful motor got put in that heavy ass car. I loved it haha, but if i had that motor in my much lighter a4, i would probably still have it doing some rapeage haha
