Break-In Smoke

how much smoke, if any, is normal for a brand new engine during the break-in period? the car has 80 miles on it and im running comp cams break-in oil. its a gen 3 block with wisecos.

been driving the car normal with the occasional semi hard (5psi or so) little rev to like 4-5k. im also breaking in a new clutch so i dont really get on it hard at all. i get some small, definitely oil smelling tiny puff of smoke whenever i drive for awhile and go to shut the car off. brand new pcv. i havent really noticed if it does it while on the throttle at all but it does do it at the end of a good drive.

im guessing its just normal wear smoke since comp cams recommended 500 miles on the oil and the car is only at just under 100 but i would like to make sure for certain. what have you guys seen?

Smoke post rebuild and after getting on it a bit is pretty normal on the LNF, even after the break in period you'll probably notice some oil smoke after a pull.

You should be changing the oil and filter soon. They say it can be ran up to 500miles, but I would get the filter changed and the dirty oil out. Assuming you used assembly lube that also mucks up your oil and filter.

thanks guys! yeah i figured it was pretty normal. the smoke has actually gone down a bit but still kinda smells oily. im at about 200 miles now so i plan on changing this break-in oil with some regular conventional for a few hundred more miles.

whats a good conventional oil to use and is 5w-30 or another weight better suited?

Mine didnt smoke after I rebuilt it.... I mean it did on the initial start for about 1 big puff but thats it.

What was the cause for the rebuild? Meaning did something cause oil to go down the exhaust? If so, that can take a while to burn off.

I used Castol 15w-40 for break in.

well it wasnt really a rebuild it was more like an upgrade. went from stock block to a built gen 3 with all the goodies. out with the old in with the new!

and yes, i actually was having some pcv issues before that was causing TONS of smoke to pour out the exhaust at idle. could very well be where all the smell is coming from.

I'm thinking that I also have PCV issues. My car has been noticeably smoking at idle lately. I'm an LSJ though and we had much worse stock PCV systems.
