I used to say the same thing about VW but know I know why everyone loves them.

1. All the parts in the car that look like metal are actually metal.

2. All the buttons are in the right places easy to read and not to close together.

3. Everything in sight IS HIGH QUALITY! the dash, seats, gauges, Steering wheels...ect

4. and it is perfectly functional. I have had all kinds of car and it seems that all of them had small problems with the design that you dont notice on the test drive, but do months down the road.. And I ask what were they thinking.

down side they do have some low quality parts in the older cars like window regulator and special soft touch coating that do come off if you use ArmourAll. So you win some and you lose some. VW are very nice, for everyday. But they are expensive to mod/maintain.

I never was a fan of the GTI. Seems the Germans dont know the first thing about sport compacts to me...

Hard to mod, slow out of the box, heavy as hell. Dunno, doenst seem like a good sport compact at all...

The worst part it cost chevy a little less to make a Cobalt, then VW to make a GTI but the GTI can be sold for 10k more... its the truth.

Dude, do you know when the GTI/Golf came out? The Germans/VW have been making sport compacts long before the Domestics even got a clue.

Yeah GTI is more expensive than the Cobalt SS... But with a "tune" alone, and a few bolt-ons your making HP that's over stock SS/TC territory.. Granted you tune the SS/TC and then we'll see..

Also the new TFSI 2.0T that's in the GTI starting next year I think is getting a slight hp boost now @211hp and torque is even more @258 which is 51ftlbs of torque more than before... add a chip and it's going to a be a torque monster and that's all acceleration...

But VW makes some good sport compacts and they've been doing it since the early 70's, back when Chevy had compacts like the Nova, & Vega... lol

Yeah Diplomat, it's probably true too...

I don't understand why you should have to get a "tune" and "bolt-ons" to equal the SS/TC in terms of power levels.

Why can't VW just do it from the factory?

For people like me that want a fast daily driver that they don't want to ever modify, Saying "Do xxxx bolt-ons to this car and it will be xxxx faster" is an irrelevant statement.

personally, i feel they are WAY too big. any bottle of water i put in topples over.

now, as far as the GTi, it's issue with me is that it's a VW, and i've never dealt with one that wasn't a nightmare of trips to the dealer to keep it on the road, but that's my personal experience. if you've had good luck with VW, stay with them.

That is exactly why I will buy a cobaltss to track/autox. I am not saying that I dont want to modify, I would just rather not to. If I can buy a car with a factory warrenty that the dealer is OK with doing autox/hpde and still keeping the car under warrenty that is great.

What I would have to do to make my current car the GTI competitive with the CSS would be a stage 2 chip 500.00, Turbo back exhaust 1300.00, LSD 2k installed, R32 BBK 1500.00, Fuel pump 900.00, HR coilovers 1850.00. and the after all of that then I would have a car that was not the best for daily driving. Why throw all that money down the drain. it would make what I love about my car go away, get rid of the rest of my warrenty, and I would never see a dime back when I traded it in.

CobaltSS 21000 out the down with my discount will be worth at least 8k-10k when I get it paid for, and if someone stole it/I crash it on the street the insuracne would give me the majority of my money owed back on it.

And with that kind of money you could have a tight interior and some go fast stuff in a SS/TC

I personally love the style of the cobalt. One of the main reasons I bought mine. I was real skeptical about the supercharged 4-banger at first, but after a few years of studying up on the ecotec, I decided to buy. Only thing I didn't like was the spoiler, and that came off within the first month of ownership.

The tranny is sh*t in the GTI from what I heard. NTM, I noticed even with that tune and bolt ons it doesnt make the car that much faster. Ive seen stage 2 balts take out the bolt on, chipped GTI's all the time. Dunno, just seems like it takes too much for that car to become a true beast.

You could get a CSRT4, buy a turbo back exhaust for $600,a short ram for $195, and put down ~300 hp to the wheels.....

Id be willing to bet it would be faster than a chipped GTI too.

well there was a stage two cobalt that got its ass handed to it buy my STOCK gti at autox. VW transmissions are very good after you get rid of the shitty shifter. Mine does not have that problem as it is a DSG. If the cobalt had DSG it would be the perfect FWD racer.

The stage two GTI out there are putting anywhere from 250-265 hp to the ground with 300 foot pounds of twist, but they do weigh to much so they need the extra power.

I heard the turbo on the css is a K04 turbo, which tuned properly on a GTI(*with same turbo) are making 300-310 hp 330 torque. so this should possible with the cobalt as well.

And for the dodge, its a dodge nuff said

its also only a 20k car. Its not a BMW or Benz. Honda's have plastic too and its not luxurious plastic either. Plastic is plastic. It all sucks. Yeah some are better looking or whatever. But you don't drive plastic. You drive the chassis, suspension, and engine. Which are all great on this car.
good luck finding plastic in a ferrari

Thumbs up

hey yall. i poke around here alot but dont really post, i got a 06 cobalt ss sc and my mod list is

zzp header
3" exhaust
stage 3 clutch (which i hate btw, liked stock better.)
zzp cold air intake
2.8" pully
comp cams
zzp tune

now with almost 90,000 on the clock and the one and only problem ive ever had is the famous floating idel. maybe some years where better then otheres or some cars where better then others but if my 06 was like some of yall describe i dont blame ya for not wanting it, sounds like a hell of a lemon. Glad i didnt get stuck with one of the lemons! my interior is in great shape also

I'll show you why I hate this interior:

My 2006 Civic Si has an ugly interior, but it's better quality. I also have holes in the driver's side floor-matt of the Cobalt, with only 27K miles. My Si driver's side floor-matt doesn't even have worn carpet showing, yet and it's an '06 with 108K miles.

If you bought the cobalt ss for interior you are a complete idiot. If you buy a cobalt and complain about interior quality you are a complete idiot again. If you buy a cobalt and complain about all the cheap things on it, you are an idiot once again.

You bought a cheap car, it's cheap for a reason. I'll take a low quality interior and awesome modification power/handling vs a nice interior and less power any day.

I'm just a true car guy tho, not some hussy vw owner or focus st nut swinger.
