08 SS/TC Custom Intake
can we fit a small cone filter into the fender where the snorkel is? similar to a fenderwell intake? I haven't gotten the dimension yet of the space in there, but if that is possible, that would be the best bet, I had a fenderwell intake on my gtp(went from a stand alone "box style" cai to it) and my scans were much nicer because of the lower temps(of not having the filter in the engine bay), of course that was supercharged without an intercooler and as someone pointed out, as efficient as the intercooler is, the extra temperature probably wouldn't be a problem... but for someone without a tune, a CAI mod is pretty much useless, you will get the "sound difference" but your PCM is just going to adjust back to way the air flow was with the factory air box...

Hmmmm.....wonder how much warmer the temps of the air are going into the filter now that you're pulling air right next to the engine???
Personally, I like your creative thinking in putting something like that together. But at the same time, I would rather have slightly less boost with colder air than more boost with hotter air.

I used a 3" short neck filter with a 5" element.
in my 2.2 i have loads of room in there, take the snorkle thing out and u have loads of room for a filter...thats what i would suggest, and its how i think TTR is going to have their intake...remove the front bumper, and take the snorkle out, than run piping down there, trust me, there is loads of room

MASSIVE amount of room in there. I replicated the cold air intake gettinausernamesucks made - 3" pipe down through that hole into the fenderwell. With the biggest filter you can get at autozone in there, there is enough room to put 3 or 4 more. And you dont have to take the bumper off to do it, remove the passenger wheel, and remove the plastic on the inside of the fender gives you enough room to work in there - just make sure to have the car well supported before you get under it. This is how I found out my e-brake wasn't holding the car, when I leaned over the car, it rolled back, knocking over the jackstand and crushing it before landing on the rotor. Thank goodness I wasnt under it.. but I should have put wheel chocks behind the rear wheels too, so it is completely my fault.
FYI, the most restrictive part of the intake is still on the car. It is the part that connects to the turbo to the "pipe" you put on. The plastic tube by the turbo is only 2.25" diameter at the smallest point....
This is what is taking so long to get our intake out....

I hate to be a dick, but that thing from the ricer aisle at autozone looks terrible.
Get a decent filter, like a K&N or a GREEN.

The only thing I don't like about it is hacking up the existing air box just seems like a waste. It makes it hard to return back to stock. I would say put a K&N drop in filter on that beast and wait for a real intake.
No need to hack up the stock box for any of these mods.. the MAF is small and unscrews, and everything unbolts, so no need to cut anything. It can be all returned to stock very quickly. Unless you do the cut the bottom out of the box mod..
The only two filter companies I have used in the past, and trust, I listed in my first post.
its just the way it is, the "cheap" filters you speak of at Autozone, are made by K&N's parent company... the difference is you pay $20 for them instead of $50 because they don't have "K&N on them" or the "million mile warranty"(which no one ever uses, lol)
I'm gonna need more than someone's posting to convince me that they are the same. Someone has to have some substantiation...

^^^Exactly. It's decent FOR NOW.
