Octane boost?

Here's a question for you all. My wife has recently started to put a bottle of octane boost with every fill-up of premium. She claims that she had noticed an increase in MPG and a better engine response.

Not that I am dobuting her claim (which I haven't verified yet) however, I am always hesitant to add anything into newer vehicles.

I know that some people do it to get an extra kick when they go to the track and stuff.

I was wondering if anyone does the same thing.

I appreciate any inputs you all have..

GM's tsb's say to add NOTHING to the fuel tank as they are gimmicks and can damage the system.

higher octane does not mean more power. it just means less chance of detonation. only time you see big horsepower advantages is when you are running mods and have the car tuned for higher octane fuel.

better gas mileage, maybe.... but what? $3-5 per bottle of that stuff and you're not saving any money.

no, it wont hurt the car. some of those products do actually clean out the injectors.

also, dont put a bottle in with every tank. every 3rd tank or even less is all that is necessary.

That's exactly what I was telling her. Its not worth the cost. I have rarely driven the car lately, so I haven't felt anything. I know she hasn't put it in lately either, since I have been filling her tank. I think its not needed.

I do know first hand that running premium vs regular does make a difference. I was driving and noticed a hesitation and felt some knocking. I just looked at her and said you put regular in didn't you. I was like its only at most another $1.30 to fill it up with the recommended premium. She wanted the trade up from the LS Sedan (as did I too) so she is going to have to accept that a performance machine will cost a little more in gas, LOL!

The octane boosters are worthless. They only increase the octane by tenths of a point, not full points. So its not like going from 91 to 92 octane. Its going from 91 to 91.1 octane. Its great if you are having break through knock because of poor gas (california) or really hot days, but otherwise its a waste of money.

To top it off you will get no improvement unless you are knockin gin the first place as the computer is designed to give a set amount of timing based off of 93 octane fuel. It wont add timing because you added 100. You would either have to step up a pulley size, or get a different tune to take advantage of the octane boost.

The hesitation was from the computer pulling timing due to knock caused from low octane gas. Not a good thing. It means you are pinging.

If you want to increase octane either by racegas or add toulene.

I don't want to add any octane. My wife for just decided to put it in there for some reason. Don't ask me why... I think the car drives fine on premium.

I think one of her co-worker's drives a GTO and he uses it, so that might be where she got the idea from.

Why would I want to post on that thread??? I checked it out and it sounds like a bunch of kids fighting. I only deal with threads that have an informative value; not some crap like you have going. That thread above needs to be locked!
