i was doing some reseach on the subject and with the uber high redline required for such a build you will not see **** for serious power on the street without good fuel that will not detonate under those pressures. 93 octane won't cut it, yes you can use it but you will be pulling back and robbing the setup of power. in which case the cost to fund such a project wouldn't be worth it. and you sure as **** wouldn''t be redlining at 8 or 9 grand on 93 with a 14.5:1. i was looking at going around 12:1 give or take and found it was gonna be a pain in the ass with this little 4banger.

If your building the block and only shooting for 215whp that is failure. You can almost get that without putting different internals in. The biggest restriction is in the head, if you get it ported you can easily see 200hp. I think with built engine you should be aiming more for 250whp at the least. Hell if you made it a 2.0 so the Bore x Stroke was even you could rev it to close to 8,500rpm. People have to understand if you build N/A all the power is going to be at the top end, that how it is with any N/A engine.

After years of this type of discussion on my old SVT Forum we came to the conclusion that be as it may a person will eventually chose a poor route. We had only a couple of 2.0l SVT's get to the 200hp mark. They ran OK and people spend 8 - 10k more than they needed too. So spend way to much to do something you will eventually replace. I would say that when you go to get rid of the vehicle, Good Luck.

Or instead, go turbo, kick everyone else's ass, save more money and buy something useful like a Money Market or Mutual Fund that will pay off when your 80 and you always wanted that 1993 Mustang Cobra R. Well, maybe not your dream but I learned the hard way.

this thread is full of 2 things...fail...and those giving good advice...no one on the fail side is listening :P

on the other hand...hitting 200whp isnat as hard as some think...but its neither cheep nor easy to do.

my goal: 275 whp...yes it wont be cheap...but it will be doable (and on street gas )
its going to involve custom pistons, rods, sleeves, ported/ polished head, custom intake mani, etc...but it will be awesome...if nothing more then to have something I built and can enjoy. I have thought many times how nice and cheep it would be just to boost...but that would be too easy and no fun :P

this, and rev it out to 7500 or so. So a valve train is needed as well. I wouldnt be surprised to see 225whp with all of this done.

its not a tough goal to reach at all, just an expensive one.
(its especially easy if you're game for using E85 full time. Then you can really go crazy with CR)

Thats pretty much a whole engine rebuild. If that was my engine and I got 225whp with all that done I would not be happy. I think depending how high your compression is, how well the head is ported, and your valve train upgrade, you could be close to 250whp. Probably sound sick as hell too. I want to see one of these motors rev to 8K, but Im not sure if its possible with this long of a stroke in the engine. You would definitely need new connecting rods.

it is poss, you would just need to remove the balance shafts

and n/a engines sound awesome

and you should see way more then that...

you have high expectations for 2.2 liters. i say 210-250whp depending on how aggressive the port job is, the cams are, the CR is, and the tune. There are plenty of LSJs that have revved to 8kRPM. Theres some youtube videos out there too. LSJ can do it with shafts and springs (though a cam is needed to make any use of this). its not pricey.

Only read the fist page so sorry if someone has posted already.

Check out vx220.org.uk, there's 2 people who are pulling about 235 bhp and running 8000 rpm using ITBs (vockey and Fab VX) on the 2.2
YouTube - techieboy999's Channel

Lots of talk about this but to summarize (applies for up to about 250BHP)
Supercharge - Relatively easy to, loads of low down torque and relatively inexpensive
ITB's - Fantastic sound, power comes in at the top end, but it's a lot more effort and money
Turbocharge - Not really an option with VX with 2.2 as you need to do some cutting of the body, just better off buying a factory 2.0 turbo

You're looking a lot more money to do ITBs but if you want to be an unique and do NA style it's the way to go. SC/TC is cheaper and gets you the power with less effort.

bit of a summary of what the guys have done...
webcon itb kit
full 2.5" exhaust
ported head
+1mm valves
double valve springs
CompCam stage 2 camshafts
balancer delete
Eagle steel rods
TTV lightened flywheel
mapping

I brought up ITB's in the thread earlier, but since this car has electric throttle body it would cost way more than its worth to get it running and working properly.

Ahhh, the VX has one as well but the Lotus cars (who made it) didn't so it's a relatively easy swap out with their bits.

Neither I nor Vocky with its ITB's got 200 whp

We both spent more than 10.000€ (that's 14.000$ on the current rate) on our engines.
8k rpm is not a problem by the way

aww, man. thats disappointing. I remember following your build. You had quite a sturdy build going there. Maybe the cams werent aggressive enough? or not enough CR? I cant remember the specifics after all this time

Honestly, all my engine internals are OK for something around 245 hp (around 215 whp I guess),
The problem is with the intake and even more with the exhaust.

If you go the N/A way, focus on making extreme exhaust ports, with a state of the art 4/2/1 with 1"7/8 primaries, the rest will follow.
Stage 3 comp cams are more than enough to get 200whp if you can get enough air in AND out of the engine.

well, im going the N/A way, but i kinda upped my displacement a bit. haha.
Ever plan on porting your head more and working on the exhaust? or is that project done with?

Yep, displacement is really the easy and sure way to make results. If I had to redo it from scratch, I'll either start with a 2.4 crank or go 88mm pistons with the 2.2 crank.

For the exhausts ports, I'll port mine like the BTCC 2.0l 280hp engines did
