Exclamation Need help and opinion

ok so i have a cobalt ls 2.2 and i was changing out the camshaft cover seals becuz i had a small compression leak in cylinder four and was told that this may be the problem while doing this i got the cover off and realized that two camshaft followers and a hydraulic lash adjuster was blown apart across the engine on the exhaust side. Didn't have any problems performance wise im assuming cuz its dual over head cam so exhaust was still going out just on one valve. anyways i got those replaced and made the mistake of not timing the car correctly..i started it and it made a weird noise obviously and i immediatly shut it down maybe was on for like 3-4 sec. So my question is ..is everything ok and should i just go have it timed properly at a dealer or do u think some valves may be bent.. i did take off the intake manifold and no valves were bent on that end..opinons plz i would love to start driving my car again but its been garaged due to this and becuz its the winter so what do u think

Thanks..

if you didn't time it before starting it somethings fucked up and if you assume otherwise you're in for a world of hurt, unless you had an angel in your engine. if it were me i'd pony up for a few quailty vavlve train components and call it a day. you had a few breaks before you started it with the timing off, think about that.

Two things you can do to check for bent valves without actually removing head.

Take out the cams and all the followers.

Get a QUALITY depth gauge or a caliper and a straight edge. Place the straight edge across the head as close to the camshaft location as possible while being over the tip of the valves. measure down from the straight edge to the tip of the valve. compare all the measurements. If youve got any measurements for a valve that differ from the rest by more than about .002"-.004" you should take consider taking the head off to inspect.

The other thing you could do is perform a cylinder leakdown test, this requires a leakdown tester.
With your cams off( if you took them off for the measurement test or still on if you like,I dont recommend leaving them on because you are pretty sure the timing is off so you will get false reading if you leave cams in) spin each cylinder to top dead center(close is good, no need to actually measure) and perform a leak down test. 5-15% is great. 15-20% indicates a worn engine, more than 25% indicates a real problem. Also pay attn to how they relate to each other and know these numbers are only guidlines. If youve got 3 cylinders at 2% leakage at 1 cylinder at 15% you should take that as an indication of a problem as well.
