Firstly the trans thats likely the best choice is the 4T45.

Its the only auto that will bolt to the ECO and to the Cobalt.

Any other trans (4T65,4T80, 6T45, 6T75) will either not bolt to the ECO (only the 6T45 does) or will not bolt into the Cobalt(none do) or worse wont fit without cutting the car

The 4T65 has alot higher capacity, but requires an adapter to fit the ECO, special torque converter(or adapter) and requires custom mounts and custom axles.

the 6speeds arent really even worth discussing, though if you search it has been before.

If you use a 4T45 plan on needing custom downpipe and charge piping, youll also need a different motor mount, youll need trans cooling, youll need shift cables, a shifter, a console trim plate, youll need axles, a flywheel

Youll either need to make the HHR electrical stuff work in the cobalt (not easy because of several reasons but chief among them is the difference in the vehicle harnesses) or youll need to run a standalone controller. One that can do the job all by itself isnt cheap or easy to setup properly, one that isnt expensive and is easy to use will make the car very unfun to drive everyday.

It would be much easier to pickup an NA auto car and build it. You should be able to find an auto car for under $5000 no problem
lol tell me about it, hopefully the thing is done before you come up for all the turbo goodness.

thank god for John, that is all

Yes mkriebs, you can use any 4t45 that was originally benind an ECO(HHRCobalt, etc) yes the axles from the HHR are needed. You need an auto flywheel from an auto LNF, thats the only flywheel that will bolt on.

Thank you sir!

Ok, talking with a few friends it seems there may be issues with some of the nannies in the car, that might be connected to the transmission. I was hoping I could get away without changing the electronics (wiring harness and TCU, mainly) by running a stand alone controller. I might be out of luck though.

I still need to do more research and give it a bit more thought on this though.

But, then again. I thought that HPT did not support the HHR Auto trans, and I was wrong! So, I think running the stock HHR wiring harness (or making a custom one) and TCU would be a nice option now, so we have stock like tunability, looks, and hopefully reliability, lol.

Not sure how it all would react to the modifications though, if we were to say... take out OD for extra clutches, etc...

I think I am going to back out of this project. I think my time and money would be better vested in a straight cut gear set for the F35. It would not only benefit the majority of the consumers, it would be the cheapest, most affordable option.

I'll still keep an eye on this thread, and would love to help to the best of my limited abilities (when it comes to Auto trans).

Id love to here what you find when it comes to a spur gear set. I ant imagine youllfind its much cheaper than an auto swap Less involved, sure. But when the basically production level Quaife 6speed setup will run you over $4000 +install I am curious what a bespoke spur setup would cost, I cant imagine it would cost any less than the $4000 of the Quaife, and if youre looking for dog engagement Id raise the price up to like $7000+

No, no dog engagement. Just straight cut 1-4 gears, stock 5th gear, with synchro activation still. I think I could get it done for less than $2k, to be honest. I mean, look at the PPG sets for Honda's, they retail for $2600, and thats with markup. Since I would be getting it at cost, I would say quite a bit under that.

But, I have been wrong a few times before, so it could happen again. Its just something I am looking into.

I love that you guys are taking this car to another level. I wish you all the best of luck. I would love to see our cars start getting a little more diversity instead of everyone with 2.8 60#

yes I got that exact quote from PPG in Australia. And for Mkreibs, retaining synchros but going to straight cut gears is even more expensive. Wow...check out www. aintgonnahappen.com.... these are all answers to questions few people are asking and fewer still are prepared to pay for...

Nah, you can get a 1-4 synchro/spur set for about $4000. It only when ou want the whole kit and kaboodle with steel forks and better shafts, or want dog engagement that the price goes that high, Dog engagement helical F23 with a proper diff would give me lots of lulz.

ya there is a big thing for whine everywhere. Our Hollinger Z06 car 6 speed sequential straight cutgears, great box hugely robust, well everyone in the paddock comes over and wants to look at the supercharger. At the car wash here guys come up all summer long with whining hot rodded pick me up trucks - Gear drive timing gears is all.

slowswap wants whine with his dinnah....
