How To Shift With An Auto 2.4?
Didn't think about it but if it will help to make you happier I can....
.
I'm sitting here wondering....do you "clutch" guys also stop people that drive pickups and tell them they need to be hauling stuff in their bed if they aren't hauling anything? I just imagine you yelling at them: "Hey, you bought a truck! Are you just posing as if your driving a car? If you bought a truck you should be hauling stuff!"
"Posing"...only a "clutcher" would think of that....

It's really shitty on the tranny to shift like a manual and you should never do it...plus when your tranny blows at 20k miles (if that) your dealer is going to know and void your powertrain warranty completely...okay maybe not completely but a new auto tranny is like 1000 bucks alone without installation; that seems like a lot of money just because you want to look cool.
It really pisses me off that automatics don't stop rolling when your at a plateau at a light...but I guess that's the point.

Well if he's shifting an automatic he must also be using the parking brake as a handbrake right?
"I believe I can drift...in my fwd car...I believe I can drift..."

I remember when I went for a test drive in a decent used ws6 and the asshat was manually shifting the automatic like a retard which made me not buy the car. If you want to buy a car where you can control shift points buy a manual or one of those manumatics if you're too lazy to learn how to depress a clutch. The point is that an automatic is not designed to be shifted manually and if you don't care whether or not you're going to destroy the transmission then enjoy being slower.

Is it the ECM or the TCM that does the counting every time I manually shift my tranny ?
I'm beginning to believe manual owners haven't got out of the cave yet....every new post proves it more and more.
WHO'S NEXT?
i have an auto and for daily driving i see no point on shifting manually the only time i would see a point is for 0-60/1/4 or somebody pulls up next to u at a red light wanting to go thats about it.

What about wanting to hear your engine, intake, and exhaust when you take off -- I like to hear it all without going WOT so I put it in "L" to start out. And the best part of an auto is you can leave it in drive most of the time, but, you have the choice to be "prepared". "I" is also for in-town traffic < 35-40MPH where you want more throttle response and full automatic without OD. The auto gives you lots of options.
You won't see me "jacking-up" manual/clutch problem threads by telling them they should have bought an automatic (about 50 to 1 manual/clutch problem threads to auto complaint threads) -- I just can't figure out why people actually think they have a say in how I drive my Cobalt
I'm glad you took out the comment about "shifting to look cool" that was an easy one to make fun of....

lol..........
shifting an Auto is not what it sounds like....
We do not make the trans shift..ecm-tcm
does all the shifting (factory presets).
We are merly suggesting what way for
it to shift.
I can slam it in L and it will do nothing (at high speed)
until the tcm parameters have been met
to shift down to the lower gears....
If this was bad for it (its not) the factory would
have given them a single drive gear......
I do play with the shifter sometimes,
it does shift way different in L - I
than in D.
I think you manual guys need to go
drive one of these autos and find out
they are not like you think they are.

I have been manually shifting my auto for 3 years now with no problems. I just like that in "I" I can run 2nd gear up to 72 miles per hour. It also helps for those roll races. 35-40 rolls, it throws you in 2nd so you dont have to wait on it to shift.
That is the only way I can beat manuals. Even slow ass cars like the saturn sc2 can get me from a roll with their manuals. Hell, I almost got beat by a Versa when leaving it in "D" then raced again in "I" and I raped him by 4 cars from 40-80.

i shift from "L" to "I" to "D" only when racing, sometimes on open/counrty
roads with 35mph limits or so, and not alot ot lights, i drive in "I" to have that
extra response. but normal city driving its aleways in "D"
also, to they guys talking about automatic guys using their e-brakes....
u guys laff, thinking it serves no purpose...but i have takin automatic
transmission classes at my school. we have learned that the lock on the gears
when you put it in park [if your on a hill] the lock mashes up on the gears...
this is what makes it hard to shift out of park on a hill. its not very good on your
transmission. so i on every automatic car i have owned, when parked anywhere.
i pull in the spot, come to a complete stop [holding the brakes still, then pull the
e-brake all the way up, then put her in park....this way after you put it in park, the
car doesnt do that little roll, and then stop [parking lock hitting the gear making the car stop]
i even pull it on flat surfaces...dont want the car to slip and have the lock hit the gears man.
i know it really wont do any/much damage....people never use their e-brakes, and never had a
problem ever....but our teacher working in the trans repair field has seen it before. so i play it safe,
and everytime i go to park my car, i always hit the e-brake first.
