Oh god yes! One of my soldiers just bought a used BMW 325i (I believe, its an '03). He got a good price on it, but I told him wait till he sees his maintenance bills.

Not really much of a money pit.
I've done internals, tuning and bolt ons and its not too bad. I've made my money back on HPTuners. Bolt ons only cost about a grand or so. Pistons were about 450, cams 400 I think, the entire valvetrain was less than 500, about the same price as the neutral balance shafts. Nitrous and cat back were probably my two most expensive purchases, 700 for each.
If you are restoring/modifying an older car then you will know what a money pit is. I got to the point with my old 72 vette that it needed a frame off and thats just a bit more than I want to invest into any vehicle.

Edit: question 2 is: speed density ECM, OBD1 MAF PCM, or OBD2 PCM? The only ones I've ever played with are OBD2 cars, actually both were 97s.

As far as the pcms go . I have no interest at all keeping a stock PCM . You really gotta know what the hell your doing with the stock PCMs as Im sure you know , in contrast tuning a fast is so much simpler . Im re-wiring the entire car with a painless 18 circuit harness and running a racepak guage cluster , so I dont have to worry about anything a stock pcm would have controlled outside the engine parameters .

Ive a friend heavily pushing me to do a LC2 , but they can get real expensive with bigger power #'s ....but Im fairly positive Ive made up my mind . I would love to do another LT1 , but I can do a LS engine and far exceed the power I could make with a LT1 when cost are concerned . Im kind of on a budget so a stock 6 ltr. LQ4 truck shortblock( to start anyways ) , solid roller cam , L92 heads with some exhaust work /L76 intake and a older FAST ecu ....is the plan for me , NA to start , no power adders . And eventually build the shortblock and convert to 76 gts single turbo and a accufab type elbow intake .
Most all PCM/ECM work I've done with GMs has been with stock computers. Never had any chance to play with a standalone on a GM or any V8 for that matter, all imports.

hahaha , going to a wide band controlled fast / XFI or big stuff3 system would be like going back to grade school . Its so much simplier . A nice C3 would make for a cool ride with a modern chassis and engine ...Ive seen some incredible c3's . Im kinda partial to the 4th gens though . Parts are cheap(er) , it has a great(imo) suspension layout and the car as a whole is kintegarden easy to work on . Once u get all the emissions related stuff ( and AC if your like me ) the engine bay is actually not bad to get around either .

I do agree, especially when I had my 72, parts for the C4s were way better priced, although some of that has changed since Zip Corvette and Corvette Central aren't the only exclusive mass distributors of parts anymore. Something about all the chrome, sidepipes, and the 4 barrel quadra-junks on a C3 always seems to put a smile on my face.

while it is true that I've spent a lot on the Cobalt... and the parts are rather expensive... I enjoy being different.
If I had wanted something cheap to mod I would have gotten a nice used Civic.

lt1 edit is retarded easy, but you also run a huge risk of frying the computer. also doesn't have a large window to play with when you get into forced induction stuff.
lets talk money pits
76 280z
bought the car for a grand.
original motor let go. **** spirals out of control. i call it quits at the tune of 15,000 dollars. i had yet to start on the body work, and finish the race head for it. when it was all said and done it would have cost me 25k to do what i wanted.
damn do i miss the SU carbs, and ease of tuning.

No one mods a cobalt or civic to be original. If you wanna be different mod a Daewoo im fairly certian there is only 10 or 12 people thinking how sweet a modded daewoo would be.
