I have put some thought into making a Cobalt AWD, surprising that I run into someone else with the same idea. I want to get ahold of another Cobalt to try this on first though. Not tearing into my current Balt. Just a thought.....the Saturn VUE is AWD, has a V6 and the wheelbase is only 3 inches more then the Cobalt. Thats if one can be found to get parts from in a junk yard. But alot would still have to be fabricated.

you guys don't understand how much work is involved in a project changing the drivewheels. Making a cobalt awd the RIGHT way would cost you in the 5 digit range...

Since this is a unibody vehicle, the following steps at minimum would be required:

Complete fabrication of a front subframe and supports to tie it to the unibody.
Complete fabrication of a rear subframe and tie it in to the unibody.
Cut front structure then reinforce after cutting.
Custom radiator support.
Cut and refab firewall and floor.
Fuel tank relocation.
Custom wiring harness.
----
All of this is before you even get to the engine....

If you are dead set on doing this to a Cobalt, it would be more efficient to take a small truck frame and shorten it, then cut and recess your floor so it doesn't look like your Cobalt body is 15 inches in the air. Then with a custom ground effects kit you could hide most of it. It would still be pretty frankencar.

As far as using a Vue- that's a unibody too. I think that would be worse than trying to custom fab something.

I'm not a mechanic, but I've done some body work in my day. This would be a nightmare. You'd be better off getting a 90's Miata and dropping a Buick turbo 6 in it.

the best way to do awd would be using saab 9-3x parts. the f40 6 speed would bolt up, use all the awd parts and make it all work. its nothing easy, it is very time consuming and would be very costly. if you wanted a v8 awd, well, good luck. it could be done, i dont know what motor/tranny combo you could use that would allow the car to sit at a normal ride height. audi is one choice i guess, so is lexus, but nothing gm is gonna work.

Fwd Northstar V8 has been done in a cavalier before... not sure how much different it would be for a cobalt. Heres the build thread:
