3rd Gen Projectors Install with HID kit, halo's, and LED's

Okay, so I am going to try and make this as easy as possible. I did a quick search on this forum to see if there was already a how to on this, but didn't find one. For this, we will be installing 3rd Gen Projectors with HID kit and wire up the Halo's and LED's.

Brenticus did do a how-to on this and had some pictures posted later on. S/he's thread can be found here.

Tools and parts needed:
10mm socket wrench
Quick connectors (about 6 of them)
Pliers
Original wires from the back of the stock headlights (picture below)

On to the install. Also, all of the pictures here you can click on to see larger sizes. Pictures are hosted on Flickr right now.

Part 1: Headlight removal.

1) Take out both of your stock headlights (or whatever headlights you may have in there). You can do this by removing the two silver bolts that are connection to the black bracket. Don't remove the black bracket screws or the headlights won't come out. You will also want to remove the two black push pins that hold on the top grill. See the blow pic and video as it will help you out better.

The video is not mine, but found on youtube and the above forum I linked to above.

2) Once you have the headlights out, you will need to take off the wires that are connected to the back of the headlight assembly. The turn signal bulb is a simple twist. The blue piece is the headlight connection, just give this a tug and it'll come off. The small white piece is the small marker light. The other black pice connects to the rest of the car. Once removed, you should have something like this. If you don't want to use the stock ones, I recommend going to a junk yard and finding Cobalts/G5's with the headlights still one them and just get the wires if you can. Got two of them for $50 ($25 each).

Now on to installing the HID's. I bought my headlights with 6k HID's. This next step shouldn't matter what HID kit you bought, just so long as the bulb sizes are H1.

Part 2: Installing HID's in the 3rd gen projectors.

1) Pull the black rubber seal from the low beam side of the headlight assembly back a little. DO NOT REMOVE THIS AT ALL AS THIS WILL KEEP MOISTURE AND WATER FROM GETTING INSIDE THE HEADLIGHTS. You will then see a blue and black wire. Using some small pliers, carefully pull on both the the blue and black wires to disconnect them from the light bulb.

2) Next, you will then see a small metal "clip" around the bulb. There will be a simple and obvious way for you to just press on metal clip which will act like a door. Move it back as far as possible, but not to far or you will break it and the take out the bulb.

3) With the bulb removed, you may now place in your HID bulb. The HID bulb will only go in one way. Just be careful to not touch the blue or try to cram it in. Once the bulb is in, just close the door on it so the bulb will remain in place. Sorry I do not have any pics of this part, but just look carefully.

4) There will now be three sets of wires coming from the HID bulb. Two of the sets that are furthest away from the bulb will connect to the Ballast. The red and black wire with the metal connections that are closest to the bulb will connect to the blue and black wire. Connect the blue with the red, the black with the black. The blow image is not my ballast, but one found on the internet. The circled portion with the "?????????" are the two wires that will connect to the blue and black wires from the headlights. Fairly good illustration imo. (EDIT: Image belongs to ianw33 on here).

End result should look something like this.

5) Remember I said to not cut the black rubber seal in step 1? Well you are going to do that, but you are not going to cut it all off, just a small portion of it so the wires can come out, but not too much so that water can get in. See the picture below for a better example. It might slide off a bit, but when you put the headlights in, the bracket behind it will keep it in place.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/73305842@N04/6731815703/http://www.flickr.com/photos/73305842@N04/6731815703/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/73305842@N04/, on Flickr

Step 3: Connect the stock wires to the headlight.

1) The picture I showed in part 1 of just the wires is the piece I am talking about. Here is the picture again if you needed it.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/73305842@N04/6732141557/http://www.flickr.com/photos/73305842@N04/6732141557/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/73305842@N04/, on Flickr

2) Look at the back of the new headlights and you will see two white covers over where the turn signal and side marker light go. Just remove those two pieces and place the bulbs in there. Putting the turn signal in is fairly easy. When place the side marker light, it would be best to use the small pliers to hold on to it and then just place it in and twist until it locks in place. They will only go in one way. Connect the blue piece from the stock wires to the other blue piece on the back of the headlights. Sorry the side marker is not in this picture.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/73305842@N04/6731815703/http://www.flickr.com/photos/73305842@N04/6731815703/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/73305842@N04/, on Flickr

3) If you do not want to wire up the halo's and LED'S you can just connect the other end of the HID bulb to the ballast and put the headlights back in your car. You may choose to mount the ballast, but that is on you to find a location and make sure the wires reach. I did not mount my ballast at all, as it just rest between the headlight housing and bracket and I do not see mine wandering around at all. Your millage may vary.

Part 4: Wiring up the Halo's and LED's.

Again this part is completely optional!!!!! If you like just having this style projectors with HID's, enjoy! I am giving cobalt_sport08 some credit on this part from the quick how-to he posted on this forum.. So if you want the Halo's and LED's wired up, then read on.

There are many options when it comes to wiring up the Halo's and LED's. The most common method is to wire them up to the parking lights (amber turn signals / amber marking light). For this, we will be wiring them to the parking light, but if you wish you wire them up differently, I'll let your creativity do it's thing. Onwards!

1) Your headlights may have come with a small black power inverter box. This box will connect to the halo's, which have a male to female connector. Since the halo wires on the housing are pretty long, I just twisted them around each other to keep them together and keep the wires cleaner. Just connect the black box connectors to the halo rings. Use some double side stick tape to then mount the black box to the headlights so it doesn't wander away on you. The black box is located next to the high beam rubber seal. Be careful when sticking this to the headlight that you don't block the screw hole. Below is the final product since I didn't have a pic during this step. Just reference this picture for the last of the steps.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/73305842@N04/6731826525/http://www.flickr.com/photos/73305842@N04/6731826525/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/73305842@N04/, on Flickr

2) The LED's will have only two wires: black and white. The black box I had you mount in step one has red and black wires. Use quick connectors to connect the red and white wires together and do the same for the two black wires. The red and black wires will be thiner that the white and black wires. When using the quick connectors, Make sure that you connect them as close to location where the LED wires come from the headlight assembly. This will allow more room and flexibility for the later steps.

3) To have the halo's and LED's turn on with the parking lights, you will need to use some quick connectors for this as well. The brown wire is the running parking light, and black is the ground. cobalt_sport08 recommended to use a "new ground" instead of using another quick connector to the black wire. We will only need to focus on the brown wire, but if you wanna use the black ground wire, go right ahead. See step 4 if you want to use the new ground route. You can see the exact wires below.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/73305842@N04/6731822907/http://www.flickr.com/photos/73305842@N04/6731822907/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/73305842@N04/, on Flickr

4) If you're reading this step, it looks like you chose to use the new ground idea. At the end of the black LED wire, just use a simple terminal connection that has an open end, kind of like a wrench. There is probably a better name for it, but that is the best way for me to describe it. When you put the headlights back in, just find a good bolt on the car to connect it to. Make sure it had a good ground connection to metal or it won't work. The location that cobalt_sport08 used in this picture will work.

Part 5: Connecting the ballast and putting the headlights in.

1) Connect up the two connections to the ballast from the HID bulb. Carry the headlight back to your car and then carefully rest it in. Also connect, or prepare to connect, the ground wire from the halo's and LED's. Connect the plug from the headlight to the harness from the car and test to make sure everything is working.

2) If everything is working, use some electrical tape to cover all of your quick connectors and the terminal connection.

3) Carefully put the headlight back in and make sure that no wires get pinched. Take your time with this. Once the headlight is back in, just connect your new ground wire for your halo's and LED's (if you chose that route) and you're done.

Here are the final results.

ummm... for the HIDs they should just be plug and play at least the ones I got.. is everything hooked up right??

When I first installed mine I had the (+) and (-) leads not connected all the way and my light would flicker until I clamped them together... BUT if you did hook em up wrong like the crossed the (-) with a (+) you might have blown the ballast like I did with my fogs..

Check to see if the other bulbs work if you can. That should confirm if its the balast or bulb. I believe blue is positive so that should connect with the red wire from the bulb. Maybe see if it works for the high beam just as a test.

If you wanna post up some pics, feel free so we can look at the wires. :-)

So this is an old thread.... but i have a question that some of you may be able to answer.... i got these headlights recently... with an HID kit.... and the HID kit i thought would just be plug and play... but then i saw the wires in the above illistration that he has as "?????????????" .... its just a 8 inch or so red wire and an 8inch or so long black wire..... where do i hook these wires up to?

I this is probably a dumb question... but im not an HID installation guru and dont want to mess anything up in the process of putting these in. Pretty sucky that these came without good instructions.

Thanks for any help you can give~

The ????????? part is the power plug for using a relay harness instead of your stock factory wires. Eliminates to possibility of damage to your stock wires. Which is a big recommendation when using a 9007 high/low HID. Now are you installing 3rd gen projectors with H1 bulbs like this how to is for or stock with 9007?

Stock 9007... Slim Xenon HID kit....6000k bulbs....35w.....and no i do not have a relay harness....

Got a deal with the headlights/HID's together.... both new parts.... so id like to use what i have if possibly withough buying anything else.... and i know they should be able to be hooked up as they are now.

This write up is for the H1 bulbs that are used in the third gen headlights. You won't be able to use the stock 9007 bulbs with the headlights. The part in the picture with the question mark is just the female end to the blue and and black wires from the following image.

If that doesn't make sense, I can take another set of pics for you.

HID High beam

So i read this post and everything makes complete since but can anyone explain on how to install the high beam HID? I mean if your gonna have HID Low beams it would looks twice as cool with a HID high beam right? I don't know what kit to buy is there one with the low/high beam? or do you have to buy them separately? By the way i don't know what gen. projector lens i have but the low/high beam are separate.
- Thanks!!!

You would essentially follow the same steps as the low beams for the high beams. The HID kit will remain the same since you will still use the same bulbs/ballast, but in the high beams spot.

The only time you would want an HID kit with low/high in the same bulb is if you are using your stock housing with the 9007 bulb. Otherwise, you will only need a single beam kit.

As for what projectors you have, there is 4 different kinds. Since you found my thread, do your headlights look like mine?

If not, check out these two threads:

HID Kits: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/appe...you-buy-94774/

Headlights: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/appe...%7C%7C-203962/

You will find a ton of info in those two pages alone.

Thanks!

WOWW thats a ton of info, that really helps me out!
I used to have the HID kit for my 9007's in my base model cobalt and now i got these projecter headlamp ones for my SS so i was confused and can't stand not having HID's.
I do have 3rd generation headlamps so when it warms up from this arctic wave ill have to put the HID on the car.

Once again thanks a lot!
