2.0 LSJ Engine: Airbox modification
Completed the Airbox Mod today. Had my AEM filter sitting on my shelf for about 10 months, so it's nice to finally have some time to put it on.
First impressions - really like the whine, although you don't hear it much until second gear. Pretty surprising once you roll down the window. It's a lot louder on the outside than what it sounds like inside. Hard to judge if there is any more power at all, but I'm sure it will breathe a little easier now.
Was a bigger pain to complete than I had originally planned on, but in the end the results seem nice.
Thanks, OP! Glad you put this together for all of us so long ago. If you don't mind, I'll take some pics later on that you can add to your write up. It took me a while to find all of the bolts and nuts to take everything off and that would have helped a bit more. All in all a good write up though.

the mod takes into account that you know how to remove the airbox, but its really not that bad.
Remove screws for the weather shield (wheel housing) 2 bolts in front of the airbox, 1 to rear, remove the clamp for the pipe and disconnect the MAF. Hardest part is gettin the box out, as it is a twist and remove item LOL!
ya, thats a writeup all its own lol!!
the HL can be a pain to get out too, but agreed it helps a LOT!

My attempt
The last about airbox mods I remember seeing was in the intake thread, but they were hacking the box to hell. I don't object to that, but I also didn't realize how easy it would be to fab up a bracket to replace the box bottom. I had a replacement Fram filter for a while, was too lazy to put it in until I saw this howto. So here is what I did....

It doesn't do too much that I can tell. The car is tad more responsive, and it sharpens the edge to it's growl; but overall my exhaust realy overpowers much of the audible "benifits". Atleast it will hold me over until I get an aftermarket intake.

^ your paper filter will eventually get wet...I wouldn't doubt it
my stock filter enclosed in the housing was dripping when I pulled it out and it hadn't rained for days
I also never went through any puddles or car washes
