Neither. It is a urethane-based paint system. The BASF tech manual states to use either an acrylic or poly-urethane paint for a successful topcoat refinish. I work for the company that actually produces the GMSPO kits for General Motors. It's intriguing to watch how many of you guys are doing this work yourselves, because when we offered to GM to paint extra trim kits body colour to offer to the public, we were told there wouldn't be enough demand to justify it. Go figure....

But if enough people were interested in a group buy for particular colours, that could possibly arranged as well. And that way it would be a piece of mind that it is a proven system that has been used on your parts that will hold up over a long period of time.
Just a question. The silver facing that surrounds the factory radio on 07+ uplevel Cobalts, is this silver facing removeable from the rest of the stereo head unit? It would be nice to be able to get it painted a matching or neutral colour. I just notice in some of the interior shots that the silver on the radio clashes badly with some of the good work that has been done by some members.

yes it can be removed but depending on the year there is quite a bit that you have to mask off. more specifically the 06 year. now it is easier to just buy the faceplate for the headunit and heater controls in black which looks good. and do it that way
I've already bought the lower black HVAC unit off eBay, but I can't seem to find anybody selling radio faceplates without selling the radio itself (which makes sense, because why would you ever separate the two?).
true. what year do you have. if its an 07 it really easy as there is nothing that is needed to tape off for functionality of the headunit. if its the 06 then you have to tape off a few things. have you tried asking locally if there is someone willing to trade a black faceplate for your silver one?
i pulled the face off my radio and painted it along with the dash tim (ultra silver) i like the difference. but now i gotta tape off the HVAC controls and paint that. thats gonna take some time
PICS or BAN! I thought about doing that, but when i realized that it was harder than i thougt to take off the radio faceplate i stopped...and i wasnt sure what the hell i was gonna do with the HVAC, i was thinking of maybe getting a decal made with the same pics on a clear background or something. let us know how it turns out.
would it last longer then the stock silver? that stuff flakes like no business

As for all you guys thinking about painting your HVAC control unit, personally, I wouldn't recommend that. It would be nearly impossible to paint over the transparent numbers and hot/cold colours for the heater/AC without it being completely botched or looking sketchy at best. The other day on eBay I bought a black HVAC unit from a used Cobalt with 100 miles on it for $25 plus shipping. To do the job right, I think it's worth the extra couple bucks.

It should. We use a proven paint system that goes through rigourous testing prior to sale to the public that ensures good adhesion, resistance to moisture, etc... I believe the GMSPO warranty covers our parts for either 3 or 5 years.
I have an '07. But I'm confused by your reply in the fact that why would I have to mask anything if I was removing the silver faceplate from the rest of the headunit?

So for my faceplate then, it should just screw/snap right off and be able to be replaced with a black one?

You know, all things considered, I do like how that turned out for you. It's tough to get a good even clear coat finish when doing it by hand, and since I work in a paint shop, I know exactly how you feel about the wet sanding. But it looks like all your hard work has paid dividends for you. Good job!

what color are you doing the HVAC controls... if your doing it black just nab one from ebay cheap or hit up a salvage yard....
Awsome, looking foward to seeing the finished product.
