Much of the time for a night lens your going to be using a fixed lens which I highly recommend but since you already expressed a budget I think this would be a better investment overall since it won't break the bank and at wide angle it has the speed needed to capture good night shots without much fuss. If you look on your own your looking for a lens that is f/2.8 or faster like an f/1.4 or if you can find one an f/0.95

HOLY ***** THAT IS EXPENSIVE!!!! ok i think i have narrowed it down to a total of 3 so far. Nikon D3100 (ebay as above) Samsung EC-TL500ZBPBUS (amazon) or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5. what do you guys think i should get. the nikon is a little out of price range but with all the stuff you get it, its a good deal.

Im guessing the color blocking in the bright green and blue is a result of fb.

More than likely, I'll throw them up Flickr and see what they look like. I wish I took more pictures. Got more drunk pics than scenery shots lol.

Actually facebook just reworked their HD pic hosting a few days ago. They are now much better than when they first started "HD" uploading.

Yeah I didn't upload them in HD. I never thought it made that much of a difference.

I think it only helps if someone downloads the picture. other than that it just makes the picture look just as shitty.

Shoot in RAW (NEF) and then convert to JPEG. You'll see a major difference.

Thats what I do. I shoot raw and use LR4 to export as a jpeg. If you use max quality there is no real downgrade.

So a friend of mine who used to shoot Nikon and now shoots Canon has found an old lens of his and passed it on to me:

Sigma 28mm f/1.8 | Olympus OM blog

Sigma 28mm f/1.8 from the early 90s. I cannot WAIT to try it out, the review on it for the Olympus loves it.

Seems like a fair amount of distortion, not unexpected for a fast wide angle. Any of these would be a match to it, though depending on your mount it may require an adapter ... if they could be used at all.

LEICA D LENS | PRODUCTS | LUMIX | Digital Camera | Panasonic Global
Digital Interchangeable Lenses | PRODUCTS | LUMIX | Digital Camera | Panasonic Global

Below would be your astro lens' of your dreams. The lens' are so fast they capture glow from light sources even in daylight o.O

NOKTON 25mm F0.95

The voigtlander lens' are the specific reason I recommended the m4/3 cameras. The future proofing of that system is already set in stone with such amazing lens'. But their also over $1k.

The future is here and the mount is Micro. Look at Nikons attempt and failure to get into the game with the 1! series. Sony jumped into mirrorless and while popular in the tech crowd their design and interface doesn't really appeal to everyone so on that front people have been slow to adopt. Canon has no presence. Panasonic and Olympus are making a killing everywhere in the world and the only resistance to it is in the US where we still think bigger is better. Olympus' next camera which I wet myself thinking about, the OMD EM-5 is insane and comparable to any aps-c based camera in all aspects, dynamic range, noise, resolution, sensitivity. Over on dpreview there are lots of converts showing up, stories of people that have long been faithful to their brand selling off all their Canon and Nikon equipment to get into the Micro scene. The thing shoots 9fps, has the fastest auto focus system in the world when used with Micro lens', built in anti dust wave filter, worlds only 5 axis in body mechanical image stabilization for photos 'and' video, built in EVF @120hz, the list just goes on. Couple that with the ability to use some of the world sharpest and best lens' ever made from the past to present in addition to adapters for all other mounts and a magnesium alloy weather proof body ... for only $1k??? Seriously the future is here and it's Micro, even I would have to buy into the new system though luckily for me I own lens' from the 4/3 line so I am directly compatible with an adapter.
