From comparisons most people have said that the d3100 is obviously not that great. The d5100 is a great camera still and the d3200 is a newer great camera. Between the d5100 and the d3200, people say that te d5100 is a slightly better camera for pictures, but the d3200 is better for video and the pictures are almost as good as the d5100. So based on what ive read and seen, id say u made a pretty good choice. Enjoy

The D3100 was fine and the price was attractive, but there was just some quirks about it that I felt like would bother me down the road.
The D3200 was what I was originally going to go with, but I felt the purpose of the camera wasn't exactly for me, being like you said having a better video experience, which isn't really a priority for me. Also, it being newer, having a higher price tag that I just thought I didn't want to spend the money for.
The D5100 was priced directly in the middle and felt like the specs were in the middle of the 3. So yeah.

It's not like these cameras get obsolete, per se. The money I saved from not going with the D3200 either leaves me with some more wiggle room for lenses.
Not bad.
For you guys that have a Nikon that isn't a pro-sumer model (D90, etc) and the 50mm f1.8..
Are you guys buying the D(AF) or G(AF-S) version?
I know the D won't auto focus on D3/5XXX, but was wondering if you guys manual focus'd instead.
The price difference is huge between them.

auto focus on the 11-16mm? If that's what you're talking about you best by the af one because it's so hard to focus anything fisheye or thaaaaat wide-you'll have to shoot at small stops (about f8) to get any worthy shot.
by the way you phrased it, looks like you're talking about a standard 50mm 1.8, but the 129$ lens has the af feature so.......
Anyway; that or I don't know dafuq you're talking about because:

Just for reference:
AF or AF-D lenses will only auto focus on Nikon bodies that have a built in AF motor. D90, D80, etc.
Those lenses don't have a built in motor, which makes them substantially cheaper.
D5100 doesn't have a built in motor, therefore only manual focus is available with those lenses on that body.
Opposite everything with AF-S.
Thx for the link. Adorama is awesome.
