Nifty 50! It's probably one of the most commonly use lens sizes. Based on the sensor crops 50mm is the closest to what the human eye sees, as it's been explained. You can never go wrong with a 50mm.
I went on a few photography forums and the most common budget lens is the 50mm f/1.8. For sure going to pick one up when the time comes, Im gonna play around with it until I start shooting a lot.
You can't be a photographer and not have a 50mm in your arsenal..unless you have a 35mm for your full frame camera.
The 50mm 1.8 standard is the most basic but important lens you should have.
This is when I submitted for The Gentleman's Rant a couple weeks ago, using a 50mm and my T3i.

I have a Tokina 12-24mm F/4, probably the best wide angle you can get for the money, its sharp and the colors are great! The only unfortunate part is that it is pretty common for the mechanics that control the aperture to go out and need to be repaired. It doesn't happen to everyone but it happened to me. The lens still works great wide open but doesn't stop down, I am planning on selling mine since I have moved to FF anyways!
I have the 11-16. Absolutely brilliant for up close pictures of you car. I'm more of a distance shooter tho so I use this lens mainly for up close action shots (skateboarding, snowboarding, mountain biking etc)

$135 at the shop.
