2012 Official Photography Thread.
A big thing is to learn the user modes and I don't mean the presets. You have M, A, S, and P. M is fully manual, A is aperture priority [you set the aperture, the camera does the rest], S is shutter priority, and P is a programed thing [I never used it so I can't really explain it]. You don't always have to shoot in "M" mode but key to learning the camera is to take it off of auto.
Mainly I use M and A myself. A is easy when dealing with moving subjects and other times when the shot is too fast to have to go through the settings. On this mode you can just pick a generic aperture to what you want f/5.6, f/8, whatever, and focus on focusing and keeping the subject in the frame versus what your shutter speed is. It's very helpful when shooting planes and cars.

The light meter inside is your friend. When I was starting out and even nowadays I often shoot 1 notch into the underexposed (-) area. Depending on what I've shot I have even gone further to make a photograph a little darker but I found that one notch underexposed gave it a nice effect, especially on a sunny day [since I hate shooting in cloudy days].
