need second opinion
need second opinion
ok, i posted about this a while back, about not having second gear, heres the deal. i believe i chewed the 2nd gear synchro but id really like a second opinion. i drive off in 1st shift to second...slight grind instantly following the tranny kicks gear selector out of second and into neutral, shift to third and everyother gear after that is ok....but heres where i get confused...took to the dealer they say bent shift fork or synchro, not under warranty cuz mechanic has pictures of me at local drag track so its abuse. anyways I CAN STILL DOWNSHIFT TO SECOND but the second i touch the gas it kicks out....so i can slow down in second but not accelerate without it kickin out.
had a similar problem in my 84 stang but with 1st gear, but i could just put it back in gear and it would stay....im stuck on the synchro because if it were the shift fork 1st gear would be fucked up as well....no? well any and all comments are accepted...i will be performing the repairs myself and also make a how to: for it as well but id just like a second opinion, especially if there is a gm mechanic on the forums.
thanx

Yeah, take it to another dealer.
That definately sounds like it could be a bent fork or synchro. When you shift to second and deccelerate, the gears are problably ok. When you hit the gas you are knocking it out of gear because it probably isn't meshed all the way. When deccelerating there is little torque going through the transmission. When you hit the gas you cause torque on the gears, and since it isn't meshed it's causing it to kick out.

Take it to another dealer, any GM dealer would be able to order the part(s) required to fix you up. Then I'd go back to the mechanic and ask for proof that the photo was of yourself, he may have a photo of you, but if it can't be 100% proven it's you (i.e license plate in picture or your face in picture) they can argue that you're the cause of the damage but they have to prove it if they are not going to fix it.

edit: its only 210% for the shift fork and synchro, so i guess i could just spend the extra 40 for the shift fork and get er done
I agree with going to another dealer because obviously you know how to drive a stick
so I don't think you F'd it up, besides you never know you might walk in the door and they might help you right away just to get you as a customer.
