I was always under the impression that the longer tubes accentuated to the loss of low end, in return, more mid-range/high-end.
As for the cat issue.. I don't think anyone is going to have a notable gain by going cat-less, maybe a few HP. There is an in-depth thread on this topic some where on this forum. But yeah, for sure, a high flow cat rapes stock.

Im not really buying it for huge gains, Im buying it for the following-
1. Long tube=torque
2. No leaky header/downpipe, v band
3. metal matrix cat, so my exhaust is quieter/less rasp
