I'm thinking I should start a build thread. Guess this is it.

I thought the quaife 6spd had 15% physically smaller gears made of the same metal. Wouldn't that make them weaker? Is there a fundamentally different design to them over the 5 spd? I.e. Most stress at the center of the shaft. Gear with most load and most traction and the least support still being the breaking point?
It's sad to think what the possibilities could've been had these fallacies not circulated. If the gearsets sold like hotcakes when they were first released, we could already be working with other gearset options right now as the demand would be evident. But any smart business will not produce/invest in a product in which there is no demand for.

One of the reasons these kits were so unpopular is because of fallacies like this being circulated. The gears are the same size as stock gearing. The extra 6th gear sits on top of 5th and a larger end cap with outboard bearings is used to fit the extra gear and further support the extra shaft lengths. There is actually less stress exhibited on the middle of the shaft now because the close/short ratio 3rd and 4th gears spread the load effectively. And the material is most certainly not the same. Quaife uses a much stronger, wear resistant metal that is case hardened to a different depth.

I am seriously considering it. I told myself my LDK build and 7163 would be my last big purchase for the car. Now this thread has my mind going. Damn you, Damn you all to hell! I do have the stock 3.82 LSD from my car laying around. Any opinions on what would be the best gear for Drag Racing? 4.05's or would 3.82 give me a more usable 1st gear or MPH in 4th on the big end? Sorry to intrude on the thread! interesting stuff : )

nope still around. just been waiting for stuff and getting stuff together. trans will be done in 2 weeks or so. had some delays. so once I got that ill update with what iv got so far.
one thing, I changed out all my analog defi and glowshift gauges for autometer spek pro. had to remove the garbage glowshift egt that went out again and screwed up threads in exhaust manifold, so had to remove turbo and manifold to fix. good thing I did cause 2 manifold nuts were gone. and turbo bolts getting loose. so went to stage 8 turbo bolts. and manifold I will figure something out, I probably forgot to retorque them second time. others were tight. so waiting for parts for that. got new wheel bearing all around I need to install, plus recirc downpipe instead of open dump. I will also be porting my intake mani. zzp makes exhaust mani ports perfect to gasket so no need to port that. also cleaning up all my gauge wiring. was kinda messy. oh and I also did a wingless trunk lid. ill post some pics
