I went to an autoparts store looking to buy a new filter for my CAI and the guy there was showing me (can't remember what its called) this like half sphere spungy looking filter (sorry for the bad description) and told me it is as good as a cone filter... Has anyone ever tried this or know someone who has... because it is relativily cheaper but does it perform as well??

Yeah, I've got the XTC Front Mount CAI. Works great. I was a little nervous about water and then to top things off we hada flood so there was a lot of puddles and 18 wheelers throwing water at the car, but it stayed totally dry and my SC screams like a freaking UFO sound now, it's really awesome. The piping could be better though.
A little hard to install. We had to dremel a little of the old piping to get it to fit and to house the mass air flow sensor. But even with all that air it's not running lean (another concern I had) and it's not giving a check engine light.

K&n

I just got my K&N on and I love it. It really lets the supercharged whine. Amazing difference in sound, cant tell a power difference. Overall I give it a 9.5/10.

NO CEL!!!

I am running the stock piping without an airbox mod. I bought a drop-in K&N filter and it made it considerably louder. Would an aftermarket piping make it even louder? The only difference I can tell would be the open-ended cone. I don't think there would be any HP gains right?

Virtually no horsepower gains and I doubt a standard pipe would make it louder yet. Maybe a 3" fugita might, but the stock pipe is just as free flowing as any aftermarket pipe.

My Very Own Piece of Art:

RD Fabs:
*True full 3"
*1 Piece
*Stainless Steel
*Powder Coated (Ruined by me, lol)
*Doesn't rub: Brake lines, fender, ECU, surge tank (IE: FITS LIKE A GLOVE!!!)

IMO, the best intake you can buy, period.

I just got back from a test drive, and holy $#!T!!!!

My baby:

No cutting bolts or bending brake lines here!

With the AEM filter I was using for my airbox mod:

Note: If I could go back in time, I would have bought some U-channel rubber to protect against the metal opening in the fender well to prevent scratches from my dumb ass when I was pushing the intake in place - too excited to care at that point, LOL

I currently have a K&N, but I'll be switching out throttle bodies, and going with a 3.5" or 4" intake with LT1 maf shortly after my car is running.

I thought you were around at least one of the times we were tearing mine apart during fabrication of the original...

Oh well, RD Fabs is by far the best intake available for the LSJ, bar none. Best welds, best fitment and only solid (one-piece) 3" stainless steel intake that doesn't buldge the fender liner.

what about RAW's 3" intake. i've heard lots of good stuff about it. i have the injen right now, and its rubbing on the hole where it passes down into the fender, but other than that it's awesome. the injen comes wth an oiled filter. i'm not sure about power gains, i've never dynoed, but it was def. louder at WOT and anytime there's boost pretty much. better throttle response, plus that awesome swoosh sound when you quickly tap the throttle.

I dont believe the CEL should come on with a intake. Did you disconnect the battery and possibly let theECU reset? I dont know how the cobalt works but thats what i had to do to my tc

Also. are there any difference with intakes? Meaning will a 05/06 fit a 07?
