victory_red_SS DD engine FIASCO
The melted aluminum is poured into a styrofoam mold in the shape of the block, then melts away as the aluminum hits it, but before it does it cools enough to take the shape. Its called "lost foam" casting and is used on most large AL castings now due to price and simplicity. The LSJ heads are sand cast, not foam, but all the N/A motors use this same procedure on the head casting as well.

And the impact points suggest it took two hits from different directions. Frankly, it seems almost impossible that something could have hit it that hard, and from two different directions, during shipping...it looks somewhat like the engine was dropped at some point and its own weight caused the damage. That is, unless the shipping company has someone with a sledgehammer going after Ecotec engines! But again, we can only assume they used standard care and caution...there's no telling what actually happened between points A and B. Who knows what mischief and/or incompetence may have really occurred!
I wouldn't even trust this block once "repaired". As someone mentioned, there could be further unseen damage.

Ah, that would explain why the chamber looks 'pushed out': it was crushed from the front side due to those impacts.
